Henryk Sienkiewicz in his published articles expressed an opinion, that the essence of historical fiction writing is to complete documentary biographies of characters. The material filling historical spaces has to be consistent with tone and mood of a particular period, at the same time taking into a account social status and psychological portrait of a hero. Characters created by Sienkiewicz connect social elements typical of a particular time in history when they lived; literary inspirations, at the same time containing transcendental elements that make Гог the essence of humanity. The kind of personalities are formed in the last part of Trylogia in the persons of Mr and Mrs Wołodyjowski. Sienkiewicz applied historical biographies to create the pictures, yet he transformed them and completed with fictional material. The literary basis for Basia and Michal’s narration is the culture Baroque. However, the influence of antic, romantic, and even XIXth century style has determined its Hnal shape. In my aricle 1 present a history of the couple created by Sienkiewicz from their meeting in an inn near Warsaw, through vicissitudes of a flourishing feeling, to the events in Chrepliów and Kamieniec, all presented in the XVII"1 century selling. The history of Baska and Michał does not go stale carrying the modern reader touching and strengthening meaning that are unchangeably connected with symbols of love and faith.

Epistolography is an ancient domain of literature, which has been recently underestimated and nearly forgiven. But considering letters of famous poets or writers, many secrets of their life and creativeness can be discovered; what’s more, many of these documents are simply masterpieces of the literature. Mails of Henryk Sienkiewicz are the endless source of knowledge about his writing and secrets of his writing techniques. One of the most interesting problems taken into account in his letters is a matter of heroines. In many letters to the family or his friends, Sienkiewicz shared his afterthoughts about women’s characters that had been described in his novels or stories. In this way, it is possible nowadays to learn about historical and literary prototypes of heroines and also trace their evolution in time; so it can be estimated, if the writer achieved his original intensions. Also in letters many characteristic attributes of Litwos’ writing like care of realism and psychological motivation of heroines, perfect observational sense and the talent of vital characters creation can be found.
