Visualization of science – it is a new research filed that allows large-scale analysis of the science evolution and historical changes in human activity. In the last decade it has become an important methodology used in the detection of current trends and both growth and fade of scientific domains. As the units of analysis bibliographic databases and the network data, such as logs, clicks, paths of users, blogs structure, communication packets are used. Due to graphical representations scientists can discover the critical changes in a proper research area and thus see scientific paradigms. Current article describes two examples of visualization in physics and computer science. In the first case, graphical pattern of cocitations in superstring theory illustrates the formation and development of the superstrings, including critical points – paradigms. The second one refers to the research conducted for several years by the author: visualization computer science literature from ACM Digital Library. Obtained maps well reflect the development of cloud computing methodology. The article presents an analytical potencial of visualization in science. Further more it indicates the need for a correlation between the qualitative and quantative methods in scientometrics.

Autorka wymienia wspólne cechy, obszary zastosowań i źródła architektury i wizualizacji informacji w serwisach sieciowych. Jednocześnie, wbrew nielicznym opiniom sceptyków, udowadnia wzajemną korzystną integrację metod wizualizacji i sposobów kształtowania przestrzeni informacyjnych.

Modern methods of information visualization (Infovis) utilize visual perception. Visualization techniques allow to present data at different organization levels in order to facilitate human understanding of complex spatial or visual data relationships. Visualization methods are widely used in information retrieval and information architects see a large exploratory potential of Infovis. The paper gives an insight into a modern information visualization techniques implemented in online services. Additionally, in contrary to opinions of a few skeptics, the author emphasizes close integration of information visualization methods with ways of shaping the information space.

The article presents main methods of visualization in the last decade. Infovis ('Information Visualization') techniques must assure user the data browsing and retrieval as well as an easy navigation, recognizing, exploring and filtering data. The human perceptual processing model was also described. In order to visualize the hierarchy of Computing Classification System we used own method based on data mapping into a sphere.

Altmetrics, as a new scientometric measure, shows the scholarly impact of a scientist and her/his social activity on social networking platforms. We analysed communication on ResearchGate within the group formed by Nicolaus Copernicus University different domains researchers. They share interest in information visualisation and form local collaboration team. We considered two compositions of research sample: the original team and the nearest collaborators. The common attributes of RG users such as coauthorship, skills set, topics, and ascribed domains were analysed. Based on these units, we carry out the sociographs to reveal social structure dynamics. Domain analysis was performed by the use of the PCA – the method which is able to extract the most essential factors from the variables set. The results indicate a good coincidence for these two approaches: collaboration between researchers and their skills development can significantly change their major. We strived to show that RG is a space of interdisciplinary training in building and identifying their own field research based on full text. Thus RG is a proper tool for crossdisciplinary qualitative analysis. Altmetrics and visualisation are mutually substituted and complemented devices, perceived as new tools for team science study. This requires, nevertheless, not only the use of appropriate tools, but also collecting a large dataset on global scientific activity within multidisciplinary groups.
