(Title in Hungarian - 'Hatekony oktatastamogatas konyvtari portal altal menedzselt kornyezetben: Az EKLEKTIKA projekt tervezesenek hattere az egri Eszterhazy Karoly Foiskolan'). Developing a library portal into a digital knowledge store requires the application of methods both from the library and information science field and from the information and communication technologies. However, the educational approach is also fundamental in the designing phase of the effective virtual learning environment. The digital knowledge store called EKLEKTIKA aims to fulfill three core functions: it will support the access to and use of library and information services; it will be a long-term solution for the preservation of library documents as well as digital materials which are not yet catalogued; and, via its special interface, it will be a technical tool supporting the e-learning training management systems. The primary aim of the knowledge portal is to enable users to create their own individual learning environment where they can customise and efficiently use information services and research tools. Users will be encouraged to step out of their 'passive' role and to contribute actively to the building of the new digital collection. This study presents the conceptual background of the knowledge portal project through the practical issues that have come up during the designing phase. http://tmt.omikk.bme.hu/print.html?id=5053&issue_id=500

Education and libraries have always been closely interconnected, despite all the changes that educational systems and libraries have undergone over the past centuries. In our times, the collaboration has become even more important and the new forms of education, together with the development of ICT tools used in education urges libraries to renew their services in a radical way. In order to meet the newly arising needs of educational institutions, libraries must undertake new tasks which have not been tested in library environment before. One of these tasks is the active support of e-learning management systems. There are many unclear issues concerning the role of libraries in e-learning. Intensive work is being done by experts of ICT and education worldwide in order to elaborate and fine-tune effective models. Hungary has also started to investigate the ways of setting up and operating a national digital collection of textbooks and learning resources. One of the ongoing projects carried out in the framework of the Hungarian Strategy for ICT in Education is called the e-Learning Library. The project aims to gradually replace print publishing of textbooks with digitally stored educational contents. Another aim is to set up digital resource centres which primarily serve customers, but also operate as centres of competence in educational innovation and methodology. The paper intends to give a definition of e-learning libraries and clarify their role in the educational system.

Information society has introduced new needs and demands towards libraries. The answer of libraries has been the development and integration of a range of new services into their existing system. When the implementation of a new service fails, the risk is that the provision of the service will be taken out of the scope of libraries. The layers of library and documentation services are supported and enhanced by the digital environment. E-learning materials also constitute a prospective new layer, but their integration and provision by libraries brings up a number of theoretical, technical and financial issues. Several libraries have reported to introduce the provision of e-learning materials, but this practice only means, in most cases, the provision of electronically stored texts free of charge or as a paying service. Thus the issues presented by the author can only be dealt with at the level of theory and cannot offer practical solutions. However, the article encompasses a broad range of issues, from the questions of unified cataloguing of metadata of e-learning materials to the creation of individual e-learning spaces for readers at libraries.
