Learning foreign languages as one of the forms of elderly people's selfactualisation
EN
The purpose of this article is to discuss factors that determine interpersonal communication (discourse) during a foreign language lesson. The considerations are based on conclusions from participant observation carried out by the author at an intercultural German language course dedicated to a group of seniors. The diversification of students, based not only on their national, ethnic or cultural origin, but also on a varied scope of their knowledge, and linguistic and cultural experiences, on different intellectual potential and diversified life needs and attitudes, makes it sometimes difficult to maintain control over the directions of communication between students and a teacher. Numerous pieces of evidence for an increasing need to develop foreign-language and intercultural competences among the oldest generations of Europeans, including Poles, prove the current character of the topic and its signifi cant nature from the perspective of the effectiveness of foreign language teaching/learning. The typology described in the article assumes the universal capacity simultaneously. It can so be used for the purposes of the linguistic education in other age groups.

The presented article is an attempt at providing a systematic outline of the basic information on the case study in the context of using in the language teaching studies. Surely, it is not discovering any new knowledge. It is rather a discussion of some obvious issues which especially young researchers frequently remain unconscious of. Simultaneously, it is aimed at provoking thinking on the topic, followed by popularising this highly interesting and valuable method as it enables to study any human activity, both the mental one and the one related to social relations, on many planes. Obviously, provided specific conditions are met.

Although the Internet originated in the late 1960’s, the actual popularization of this medium took place in the 1990’s. In Poland this process was initiated, and still continues, with a few years’ delay in comparison with West European countries or the United States. However, the Internet services market has changed significantly also in Poland ever since. The Internet has revolutionized almost all realms of life. It is becoming an increasingly popular sphere of activity among not only young people but also the elderly. This, in turn, creates new opportunities to learn about the elderly and the way of their individual and social functioning. This article presents sources of knowledge of Polish Internet websites and their users. The Polish elderly as Internet users have been described here as well. The Internet discussion forum serving as a new sphere of activity and a source of cognition of the Polish elderly has been discussed. Finally, an attempt has been made to define research potential of the aforementioned sphere in terms of language education studies.

Developing learners’ lexical subsystem is one of the most important tasks of foreign language didactics. The observable turn towards vocabulary (“Wortschatzwende”) has contributed to an in-depth reflection on learners’ lexical competence, including their strategic competence. The aim of this paper is to present results of a correlating research concerning the influence of personality variables (understood according to the Five-Factor Model) on the range and frequency of strategies used by Polish high-school students to learn German vocabulary. The research project described in this paper was conducted in April 2021. The Polish adaptation of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory was applied to examine the learners’ personality traits. The Polish version of Schmitt’s Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire (VLSQ) was used to investigate students’ preferred strategies for learning German vocabulary. Based on the conclusions from the research, an attempt was made to formulate practical guidelines for foreign language teachers concerning the possibilities of developing learners’ lexical competence. The report is complemented by a list of open research questions and problems in this field.
