The main task of this text is to present the subject matter of the fifth volume of The Polish Peasant in Europe and America written by W.I. Thomas and F. Znaniecki. In this context, special attention will be paid to the criminal activities of Polish immigrants in Chicago in the first two decades of the 20th century. The point of departure for the reflections is the point of reference to the fragments of the five-book, repeated many times in the literature, which often do not go beyond the first three volumes, and at the same time impose a dominant and schematic interpretation discourse for the whole work. The subsequent parts of the text reconstruct the history of migratory waves coming to Chicago from the end of the 19th century on the basis of ongoing social, industrial and urban transformations, and thus the birth of urban crime. The crime history of Polish immigrants in Chicago allows us to re-examine the work of Thomas and Znaniecki from a different perspective (mainly from American sources), emphasizing at the same time the social conditions of the beginnings and the development of criminal structures in migratory environments, while at the same time drawing attention to this topic, commonly ignored in the history of Thomas and Znaniecki’s work and Polish-American relations. This paper is an attempt to present revitalisation of Polish cities in a theoretical aspect (definitional, conceptual) in relation to a research project ‘The Result of 5-year Experience of a Pilot Process of Revitalisation at the Poznań district of Śródka’ carried out as an intercollegiate grant (Poznan University of Technology, Poznan University of Economics, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan) in 2010. The starting point was a question of the status of the space in the contemporary context and the value of the temporal perspective as a link between the popular and the scientific perspective of understanding the social actions related to revitalisation. Emphasising the role of a psychosocial order allows to illustrate the tension between the multidimensional character of experiencing the space by its inhabitants and the expectation of unambiguous determinants governing the revitalisation actions performed by its navigators. The necessity of paying attention to those different ways of ‘thinking about revitalisation’ postulated in the paper is not only a direct reference to the question posed in its title, but also a ferment fruitful to formulating solutions for numerous problematical issues, that is those related to the evaluation of the revitalisation process.

The development of geographic information accompanied by the expansion towards accumulation of the greater and greater amount of geospatial data – initiated the specific theoretical marriage of reflection on objectivizing character of the digital imago mundi and the cognitive relationship between the “state of the world” and the “state of the mind”. Whereby, electronic repositories of “geoevery- kind” data constitute the direct articulation of consciously acquiring and organising spatial data, additionally supported by the evidence of emergence of the new and inspired by “the sciences of cognition” (that is: cognitive psychology, cognitive science, philosophy of the mind, etc.) technologicalsolutions in this realm. Such a theoretically-technical amalgam of information considerably limits – and being the clue of this paper – the explanatory usefulness of digital spatial data in the sociological analysis and deforms the contemporary state of knowledge regarding spatially-driven collective behaviours, leading to the rise of the mentioned myths.

The article aims to answer the questions about the specificity of the presence of emotions in the classic autobiography of Władek, published in: The Polish Peasant in Europe and America (1918), by William Thomas and Florian Znaniecki, a work which has inspired researchers for a hundred years. The authors presented the issues from three different perspectives: (a) theoretical assumptions of sociology by Znaniecki and Thomas, (b) cognitive orientation rooted in research questions and the image of the world of the early twentieth century, and (c) issues of autobiographical analysis interpreted in conjunction with contemporary assumptions of analysis formulated by Fritz Schütze. Apart from questions strictly related to the work of Thomas and Znaniecki, the analysis also includes elements of interpretation of the contemporary evolution of sociology of emotions, leading to the formulation of a simplified description of the evolution of biographical analysis. The conclusions aim to make an instrumental treatment of emotions both in the traditional Thomas and Znaniecki texts and in the contemporary example. This suggests, among other things, a certain level of incompatibility of studies on emotions to classical and selected contemporary research studies, but also allows us to conclude about the status of The Polish Peasant..., not so much as a canonical work, but rather a breakthrough for both problems. In the latter case, the attention to emotions was directly related to the evolution of sociological reflection towards individualization (in terms of approach) and towards symbolic interactionism.

Analiza zawiera obok kwestii stricte dotyczących pracy Thomasa i Znanieckiego również elementy interpretacji współczesnej ewolucji socjologii emocji, prowadząc do sformułowania uproszczonego opisu ewolucji analizy biograficznej.

The history of artificial light (kerosene, electric, LED) is at the same time the history of the origins of the urban landscape. Beginning with Benjamin's Passages, in which the light brings into view the enshrouded alleys of Paris, through numerous artistic projects of the 19th and the 20th century, M. Bille's anthropological and A. E. Stamp's behavioural studies, ending with the concept of the intensity of light as the indicator of the metropolitan potential of a given region of the world (e.g., NASA World Lights project), as well as an element of the anesthetisation of urban iconosphere (e.g., light and laser design), the light is also becoming an inherent element of research within urban and spatial studies. Usually, however, the subject of light occurs 'additionally', 'by the way', as a 'supplement', and not as the primary theme, i.e., the basic line of reflection and the mutual realm of presented ideas. Considering the fact that artificial light generated the phenomena unknown thus far (e.g., light pollution, over-illumination, etc.) and led to the modern victory of humanising and familiarising urban space (e.g., 'nightlife', traffic, etc.), it is, however, necessary to define its role within social processes, as well as its location in the realm of urban and spatial sociology interests, as equivalent in relation to other topics. The article is an attempt to 'rehabilitate' the subject of light within the realm of social sciences and to point out possible explanation paths concerning the reflection on 'cities of light'.

The purpose of this article is to show the different possibilities of applying supervision in the network society, which seems to be particularly susceptible to these types of practices. The scope and forms of social control in the dimension of the network will be discussed at both the level of individual applications of the generally available tools, as well as at the more sophisticated system of specialized programs. Apart from the perspective of surveillance in terms of advanced technology, the possible defensive tendencies also will be presented.

The proposed study is an attempt to address the issue of emotions in the context of the biographical analysis proposed by W.I. Thomas and F. Znaniecki. Due to the canonical character of the work and its theoretical significance, a comparative analysis with the example of Fritz Schütze’s biographical analysis was applied, recognizing that only against the background of the contemporary research approach will the value of Thomas and Znaniecki’s work be discernible. The research idea of the authors of the article was therefore, in a way, exploratory. The conclusions of the analysis allow us to describe the status of emotions in classical and contemporary analysis; on the other hand, to critically interpret the autobiographical text of Władek (Volume III of the Book), together with the analytical work carried out on this text by both authors. The text of the article refers to excerpts from works on emotions, but also reviews the literature on the subject, concerning the perception of emotions in American sociology from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and from the first half of the 20th century, which gives grounds for answering questions about the sources of understanding emotions in the contemporary sociological literature. The article aims to reconstruct the history of Karaites in the perspective of dualisms of identity (poligenealogies, bilingualism, etc.) among this ethnic and religious group, which according to the authors is an illustration of “postmodern identity re-transformations”. Emphasizing the social and religious aspects of Karaism the authors portray “the minor minority” of the Republic of Poland as an exemplification of postmodern statements on “troubles with cultivating identity” in which the cardinal constructional rule remains “doubting” in Anthony Giddens’ terms. Scrutinizing the first references and records on Karaites as well as their wandering history throughout the whole Europe up to the contemporary times, the authors propose a thesis on the immanent features of deterritorialization and identity eclecticism ascribed to Karaism from the dawn of its history. Thus the title “question about identity” of Karaites remains a dual one: directed towards the past (“who were we?” and “where do we come from?”) as well as to the future (“who are we going to be?”, “where are we heading?”).

This paper discusses a research project that attempted to examine selected public institutions' response strategies to a pandemic. The most important research question of the project was the relationship between the pandemic and innovativeness of the sector of public institutions (understood as the desire to introduce new ways of operating, new inter-institutional links, new patterns of relations with stakeholders, etc., resulting from the knowledge provided to individual institutions by functioning under the conditions of the pandemic). During qualitative research we found that the researched institutions' predominant reaction to the challenges of the pandemic was not an orientation towards innovation but a striving to maintain a mode of functioning that is as similar as possible to that from before the pandemic. The innovations made (transition to remote working, simplification of some administrative procedures) resulted from external pressure to a greater extent and internal reflexivity to a lesser extent. The narratives captured in the study about the everyday life of public institutions during the pandemic have three common elements. First, they all focus less on large and spectacular innovations and more on micro-innovations (not treated as innovation, but understood as dozens of micro-improvements, minimal adjustments to existing routines). Second, they all miniaturize the experience of the pandemic, regarding it as events so extreme as to be useless for designing a better institutional order. Thirdly, all the reconstructed narratives are situated in an institutional zone of in-between, which means that they perceive themselves as a transparent medium fluctuating between the state and society and as a subject without influence on the shape of its own functioning. On the one hand, this would depend on the level of civic culture and, on the other hand, on the policy created at the highest levels of the state.
