This text is a form of reflection on the secrets of the personality of Krystyna Herling-Grudzińska and was written on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the paintress. In this short essay Krystyna is shown above all as a woman who inspired eminent Polish writers and who can be considered among the ‘Muses’ of Polish literature of the second part of the 19th century. The image of the artist’s personality conveyed in the paper is based mainly on the poems Władysław Broniewski dedicated to her.

Tekst poświęcony jest refleksji rocznicowej (związanej z setną rocznicą urodzin Krystyny Herling-Grudzińskiej). W eseju poruszana jest kwestia tajników osobowości artystki oraz jej zdolność do inspirowania tekstów wybitnych polskich pisarzy. Bohaterka eseju potraktowana zostaje więc przede wszystkim jako Muza. Obraz osobowości bohaterki budowany jest w znacznej mierze za pomocą wierszy Władysława Broniewskiego dedykowanych Krystynie.

This article is dedicated to a review of questions related to the categories of seeing and the visual in the prose of Gustaw Herling-Grudziński. The paper shows the functions of the eye and seeing, as well as the significance of the literary images created by the writer. It also points out to the painterly stylistics which provide an important context for understanding the eclectic character of the visual layer of his works. On the example of some chosen extracts from the story entitled Wieża (The Tower), the article presents the sensual richness of the ideas used by Herling-Grudziński, focusing on the methods he adopted and describing the main goals he wanted to achieve by his application of certain literary tools.

Artykuł poświęcony jest kwestiom przeglądowym związanym z widzeniem i wizualnością w prozie Herlinga-Grudzińskiego. Ukazuje funkcje oka i widzenia oraz znaczenia nadawane przez pisarza kreowanym obrazom literackim. Zwraca też uwagę na stylistyki malarskie, stanowiące kontekst dla zrozumienia pewnej eklektyczności warstwy wizualnej prac Grudzińskiego. Na przykładzie fragmentów z opowiadania Wieża prezentuje też sensualne bogactwo stosowanych przez tego autora rozwiązań, koncentrując się na określonym wycinku warsztatu Herlinga i jednocześnie przypominając o celach realizowanych przez niego przy pomocy wybranych zabiegów.
