The Problems of Semantic Equivalence in Different Types of Ukrainian-Polish and Polish-Ukrainian DictionariesThis article deals with the problems of semantic equivalence that authors of various types of dictionaries, including bilingual ones, are faced with. Words and phraseological units of common Polish and Ukrainian origin separately developed their systems of meanings in both languages, making it difficult to identify analogues that adequately reflect the semantic structure of linguistic units. In general, the author’s assumptions are based on experience of publishing Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Polish dictionaries of various types. Problemy ekwiwalencji semantycznej w ukraińsko-polskich i polsko-ukraińskich słownikach różnych typówArtykuł porusza problem ekwiwalencji semantycznej, który napotykają autorzy słowników różnych typów, w tym dwujęzycznych. Polskie i ukraińskie wyrazy i jednostki frazeologiczne o wspólnym pochodzeniu rozwijają w każdym języku swoje własne systemy znaczeń, utrudniając określenie odpowiedników i adekwatne odzwierciedlenie struktury semantycznej jednostek. Ogólne założenia autorki są oparte na jej doświadczeniu w publikowaniu polsko-ukraińskich i ukraińsko-polskich słowników różnych typów.

This paper specifi es principles for contrastive analysis of Polish and Ukrainian. The explanation of the causes and effects of the coincidences/discrepancies between languages is based on the data of historical and comparative linguistics, semasiology, onomasiology, ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, etc. The most important common and diverse phenomena in phonetics, lexis, phraseology, word formation, infl ection, and syntax were shown. The causes of the similarities and differences between Polish and Ukrainian are related to complex linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The formation of linguistic phenomena is, to an extent, infl uenced by the differences in the perception of the world by each of the nations.

In the context of Ukrainian and Polish the differences in the adjectives combinatory power have been studied. The adjective was shown to be able to form the syntactic and semantic connections with noun as a reference component of the complex. The analysis made it possible to some extent show the convergence and divergence of the grammatical and lexical systems of Ukrainian and Polish.

Na materiale języka ukraińskiego i polskiego zostały zbadane różnice w łączliwości przymiotników. Przymiotnik może wchodzić w związki syntaktyczne oraz semantyczne z rzeczownikami jako człon główny grupy wyrazowej. Analiza do pewnego stopnia pokazuje zbieżności i rozbieżności systemów gramatycznych i leksykalnych języka ukraińskiego i polskiego.
