The paper is a review of the book by Janusz Byszewski and Beata Nessel-Łukasik Muzeum relacyjne. Przed progiem / za progiem [Relational Museum. Before the Threshold / Beyond the Threshold] inaugurating the ‘Museology: New Places’ series. It discusses in more detail the title project and the assumed relational museum which in its authors’ understanding is characterized by the focus on the relations of a museum as an institution with the local community, based on a rich social programme, co-created with museum’s external actors on an equal-footing basis. Both the volume’s content and its experimental stylistic, with a special focus on its graphic layout are discussed.

W artykule badana jest pamięć kulturowa o powstaniu warszawskim przejawiająca się w „Kinderszenen” Jarosława Marka Rymkiewicza i w „Widmach” Łukasza Orbitowskiego. W pierwszej części autorka analizuje sposób konstruowania pamięci o powstaniu przez Rymkiewicza oraz rozbiera strukturę retoryczną jego wywodu. Interpretacja prowadzi do wniosku, że strategią prezentacji powstania jest tu hiperbolizacja, a w efekcie ukazanie go jako decydującego dla afirmowanej polskiej wspólnoty. W drugiej części, dotyczącej Orbitowskiego, analizowane są sposoby i skutki ukształtowania powieści jako historii alternatywnej; autorka proponuje lekturę „Widm” jako tekstu metapamięciowego, który ukazuje niezbędność powstania warszawskiego w polskiej pamięci kulturowej. Końcowe porównanie obu pisarskich strategii pokazuje, jak zbiegają się one we wspólną figurę powstania-hiperboli, koniecznego elementu naszej rzeczywistości.

The article studies the cultural memory on the Warsaw Uprising as present in Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz’s “Kinderszenen” and in Łukasz Orbitowski’s “Widma (Specters).” In the first part, the author of the article analyses Rymkiewicz’s mode of construction of memory on the Warsaw Uprising and dismantles the rhetoric structure of his argument. The interpretation leads to the conclusion that the hyperbole is a strategy of the uprising presentation and in effect Kobielska sees it as a deciding factor in Rymkiewicz’s affirmation of the Polish community. In the second part, which refers to Orbitowski, she analyses the ways and effects of building the novel as an alternative history. Kobielska suggests a reading of “Widma” as a metamemory text which shows indispensability of the Warsaw Uprising to Polish cultural memory. The final comparison of the two writing strategies shows the convergence of the two modes into a common figure of the uprising-hyperbole, a necessary element of our reality.

Artykuł stanowi recenzję książki Janusza Byszewskiego i Beaty Nessel-Łukasik Muzeum relacyjne. Przed progiem / za progiem, inaugurującej serię „Muzeologia – nowe miejsca”. Przybliża tytułowy projekt i postulat muzeum relacyjnego, które w zamyśle twórców wyróżnia koncentracja na relacjach muzeum jako instytucji ze społecznością lokalną, opartych na bogatym programie społecznym, współtworzonym na równościowych zasadach z aktorami zewnętrznymi wobec samego muzeum. Omówiona zostaje zarówno zawartość treściowa, jak i eksperymentalna forma podawcza tomu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jego projektu graficznego.

Whilst Poland appears today as a paradigmatic example of a homogeneous, exclusive national and cultural identity, reinforced by the hegemonic historical policy of a semi-authoritarian state, it is also challenged by Polish minority histories (civilian, multi-ethnic, non-Catholic, women). The main concern of the present article is the plural ‘Polishness’ that emerges from the constellation of these non-default histories. To examine the frictions of historical narratives in action, authors use spaces of historical museums as a field of observation, perceiving them as memory agents fostering not only confrontational but also negotiative memory politics. To identify situations in which tensions between the ‘central’ Polishness and its unorthodox variants are particularly evident, the paper takes a look at ‘non-central’ Polish territories i.e. ‘post-German’ areas, characterized by a complex heterogeneous past in which Germanness and Polishness, but also ‘Silesianness’ or ‘Borderlandness’ mutually clash and dialogue. Analysis of selected exhibitions’ construction reveals peculiarities of different local contexts in transitional spaces and strategies of resolving creeping conflicts between ‘the Polishness’ and plural, peripheral ‘Polishnesses’. As authors argue, these case studies – instead of a static model of open memory conflict and binaries – offer dynamic models of memory, and allow to introduce the concept of memory frictions.
