Cassirer’s conception of the modern political myth needs to be treated as one of the elements of his philosophy of culture. To apprehend the conception without its systemic background would be against the “spirit” of this specific type of philosophy which is characterised by focus on coherent unity. It is true, however, that Cassirer only devoted his last writings to this topic, in the period when he lived a life of an exiled Jewish intellectual. Myth as a specific form of thought has never lost its power and it easily takes control over people’s minds and emotions in the times of crisis. Modern politicians are well aware of this fact. They organize myth and adjust it to their political needs and use it for their concrete political ends. The only solution is to understand the nature of the new myth and to fight it with fortitude and generosity.

(Eco)criticism of Pure Perception In this excerpt from his 2003 book Virtually Wild: Wilderness, Technology and the Ecology of Mediation Tomasz Sikora looks at how the modern subject constitutes itself through a perceptual appropriation of “nature” or “wilderness,” an appropriation that is always already mediated through technology, even though this fact tends to be denied or forgotten. The (mostly American) idea of pure, unmediated or transparent perception, as an attribute of a primordial, wild or uncontamnated self, is critiqued with a view to developing a different ecocritical way of thinkng about the relationship between “self” and “world.” It is mostly through a reading of two poems: “An Anectode of the Jar” by Wallace Stevens and “Hawk on a Wire” by Nelson C. Sager that the article illustrates both the (Western/American) fantasy to perceive the world in a “pure” way and, ultimately, the impossibility of such perception. Instead of the false natural-technological binary, the author postulates that a new ecological awareness should focus on the process of mediation (or the medium) itself.

As far as country's economy is concerned employing the elderly citizens is both a specific social need and the economic necessity. Low professional activity of those who are at retiring age together with the aging of Polish society may lead to the breakdown of country's pension system and public finances. That is why civil and military pensioners who have gained the right to an earlier pension and who are willing and healthy enough should take up professional activity. This is the way to enlarge their income which will assure them better material status. At the same time taxation of the income will enrich our country’s budget. In addition, pensioners' professional activity will support development of Polish economy. Owing to their experience, people who have acquired pension entitlements are often well prepared to face new challenges. They know how to cooperate with others and how to establish effective business relationships. They are also loyal to their employers and can work flexible hours. In Wielkopolska, among those pensioners who earn on the side, there is a numerous group of military pensioners. They do not want to spend their time at home idly. In addition, they often have unemployed wives and children to provide for and their retirement pension is not sufficient to pay the rent or to buy medicines. What is worse, growing debts of the families are the effect of this situation. The above essay familiarises the reader with the problematic issue of employing military pensioners on labour market in 2008–2010.

Our objective has been to review, analyze and evaluate the pension scheme for professional soldiers and their family members in Poland, including the current legal regulations governing this area. The unique legal status of the armed forces in Poland has always been associated with the commonly held belief that professional soldiers and their families enjoy a special, privileged position in terms of social security compared with other occupational groups. However, the unique and more advantageous conditions for the acquisition of health or old-age pension rights drawn up specifically for the armed forces can be seen as compensation for the high psychophysical and intellectual expectations that professional soldiers must satisfy. These expectations include requirements such as constant work availability, willingness to risk one’s life and health and, in general, a higher degree of work stress among professional servicemen than among other groups of employees.
