Comparison of the potential of fruit-and-vegetable processing industry with crops and commodity production of horticultural crops in Skieniewice providence reveals a substantial surplus of technical processing capacities over the local output of fruit and vegetables. Insufficient utilization of production capacities and a considerable share of supplies of raw materials, and especially fruit, from other administrative provinces testify to the need for active and direct cooperation of plants with agricultural farms lying within a radius of 10 km from the processing plant in order to ensure a marked growth of raw material production in the vicinity of the plant. A big number of plants scattered in the area of the province, long-lasting tradition in cultivation of many horticultural plants, and quite favourable natural conditions offered by the habitat over a large part, of the province provide a good foundation for further expansion of the horticultural production. Prom among different forms of Influence exerted by processing plants on their agricultural suppliers of the greatest importance seems to be direct cooperation with farms in production of raw materials by means of technical, financial, and training aid, and educational activity aimed at improving professional qualifications of producers. Consolidation of functional and spatial ties between the fruit-and-vegetable processing industry and its suppliers should ensure not only a better supply with raw materials but also higher intensity and modernization of the entire agricultural production in the province.

The present production capacity of the fruit-and-vegetable processing industry in eight administrative provinces of central Poland constituting the food-supply area for Łódź allows to process ca 60-70 thousand ton of fruit and 100 110 thousand ton of vegetables annually, which represents 27 per cent and 17 per cent of their annual pick respectively, and about 50 per cent and 40 per cent of their average purchases in a year characterized with quite good crops. The biggest production capacity is possessed by the food-processing industry of Skierniewice, Płock, Włocławek, and Kalisz provinces. Despite quite a considerable intensity of horticultural production in the vicinity of many plants, the supplies from other and sometimes quite distant provinces play a big role in processing of fruit and vegetables. This is especially true in case of fruit. Further desirable development of the processing industry in central Poland should envisage expansion of a network of small and medium-sized processing plants consuming 5 to 10 thousand ton of raw materials grown and picked in the radius of 15 kms from these plants. While choosing location for such plants preference should be given to the already operating small processing plants situated on areas of potential surpluses of horticultural production. This refers first of all to the administrative provinces of Sieradz, Piotrków, and Konin in which the level of output of the fruit-and-vegetable processing industry in relation to annual pick of vegetables and fruit and their centralized purchasing displays low indices. As regards the raw-material supply areas for majority of plants it becomes necessary to expand the area on which vegetables are grown to at least 3 thousand hectare and to 6 thousand hectare in ca se of fruit with adaptation of their qualitative and variety structure to requirements of the industry. Operations of this kind should pave the way for closer spatial and functional ties between the fruit-and-vegetable processing industry in central Poland and the local horticultural production.

The article discusses the present sta e in the animal production within the food zone of th e urban administrative province of Łódź against the background of fodder supplies. There is also outlined the concept of development of these food economy spheres till 1990. The food zone in question, despite its insignificant fodder resources, is charaoterized with a big size of livestock and big marketability of the animal production. The spatial distribution of animal breeding and of market-oriented production is differentiated by natural and socio-economic factors. Intensification of the fodder base and its proper utilization will pave the way for rational development of the animal production, and thus for increased production of food in the food zone of Lódź administrative province.

Effects of agricultural production in the analysed group of eight administrative provinces of Central Poland are favourably affected by: suitable geographical situation in central part of Poland with easy access to absorptive market for agricultural produce, well developed network of roads, sculpture of the land, long vegetation period, quite considerable manpower resources, and other factors. On the other hand, on the negative side there must be listed unfavourable soils (with the exception of the administrative provinces of Płock and Włocławek), low precipitation, bad quality of beaten tracks, low density of railway lines, and poor capital intensity in agriculture. Effects of agricultural production assessed on the basis of intensify of agricultural utilization of land and animal breeding, crop yields and effectiveness of animal production, ratio of the marketable surplus to the total output etc. are best in the administrative provinces of Włocławek, Płock, Kalisz, and Sieradz, and lowest - in those of Piotrków, and Skierniewice. Typically rural character of agricultural production in the urban province of Łódź despite proximity of the absorptive market for agricultural produce is quite amazing here. The above mentioned group of administrative provinces of Central Poland accounts for a much bigger share of the national food production than its share of arable land. Absence of land reserves poses a requirement of better and better utilization of the available land resources through technological, social, and economic modernization of the whole agricultural production in Central Poland.
