Americans have been expansionistic since their colonial beginnings, undertaking to impose submission on the interior for over two centuries. This expansionism proved to be an unusually strong binder for the society of the young state, assuming the shape of 'Manifest Destiny' of President Polk and his successors. It usually served down-to-earth interests but was legitimized with ideas of great missions supposed to spread the perfect system created by the 'nation of nations'. The ideas of missions both in their peaceful and conquer form have become an integral part of the American 'civil religion', ritualized by practically all its leaders. Missionism combined with expansionism was the dominant tendency which came to the foreground after 1989. The new hegemony gradually transformed into domination on the international scene, forcing other agents to adopt measures desirable for the neo-liberal establishment. The determining factor was the power of the military-industrial conglomerate, which was not to be underestimated, as today over 600 billon dollars are allotted to military demands. It also seems that President Barack Obama is fated to the practices of a crusader even though the hopes connected with him are hopes for a different, better world.
In this article we see Great Awakenings as the results of critical dis-junction in self-understanding. They are not brief outbursts of mass emo-tionalism by one group or another but profound cultural transformations affecting all Americans and extending over a generation or more. Awak-enings begin in periods of cultural distortion and grave personal stress, when people lose faith in legitimacy of norms, the viability of institutions and the authority of leaders in state and church. They eventuate in basic reconstructing of institutions and redefinitions of social goals. Great awakenings are not periods of social neurosis, they are times of revitali-zation, they are therapeutic and cathartic, not pathological. They restore cultural verve and self-confidence, helping to maintain faith. Revivals and awakenings occur in all cultures. They are essentially folk move-ments, the means by which a people or a nation reshapes its identity, transform its patterns of thought and action and sustains a healthy rela-tionship with environmental and social change. To understand the func-tions of American revivalism and revitalization is to understand the pow-er and meaning of America.

The end of 20 century, to be sure, eroded the sense of political, social and individual safety. The era, we’ve just entered – whatever we decide to call it – is bound to be more painful than the one we’ve just left. After the collapse of a Soviet Union and the end of the cold war, the great hopes was the world would develop In benign ways, focusing on economic development and political liberalization. For decade there was significant progress in that direction. But there have also been some disturbing trends. As a society we will have to learn to live with new threats and terrorism is one of this. It is in that sense, more than any other, that people are right when they say that everything has changed. This leads to a paradoxical situation. Overnight, living with a threat of terrorism became part of everyday life. Disagreeable as that reality is, it’s better than the alternative of lulling ourselves into false complacency, sloppy protection and haphazard responses.
Demokracja potrzebuje podejmowania działania bez nadmiernego uprzywilejowania status quo.

Democracies need coercion primarily to take action without overly privileging the status quo. When individual interests come in what gives every indication of being an irreconcilable conflict, a democratic polity must either reinforce the status quo by taking no action or by taking action, force or threaten/coerce/some of its citizens into situations or actions not in their interests. Majority rule is one standard mechanism for achieving a relatively fair form of democratic coercion. Democracies can undoubtedly settle some of many conflicts through deliberation. Deliberation can help transform interests ad reveal previously unrealized areas of agreement. It can also sharpen participants understandings of their conflicts. In a good democracy, large or small, the deliberative arena should ideally be equally open to all, and power – in the sense of threat of sanction or the use of force – should not interfere with the impact of the better argument. At some point and some issues, deliberation will not lead to agreement. Good deliberation will have opened areas of agreement and will have clarified and remaining areas of conflict. The participants will have come to understand their interests, including their conflicting interests, better than before deliberation. But material interests, and interests in one’s deepest values, cannot always be reconciled with the interests, material and ideal, of others. At this point, when conflict remains after good deliberation, a democracy has two choices – to remain at the status quo or to act, by coercing some to go along with others.

In this article we try to steer clear to qualitative factors of human beings. It’s obvious that the search for hopes, fears and expectations are an important components of the quest but we often forget about it. For many people in this essentially individualistic culture it is preoccupation that virtually eclipses the idea of salvation on earth in future, the other central dimension of the search. At very least, the pursuit of salvation offers a point of entry. It’s naturally that societies exists through a process of transmission quite as much as biological life. The transmission occurs by means of communication of habits of doing, thinking and feeling from the older to younger. Without this communications of ideals, hopes, expectations, opinions from these members of society who are passing out of the group life to those who are coming into it, social life could not survive. We had to remember about it in process of education, sometimes we had to stay face to face with the future.
