In his collecting activity in Slovakia Karol Plicka (1894 – 1987) gave particular attention to the Záhorie region. Taking the example of the village of Jablonica in the eastern part of this region, we demonstrate the collector’s interest in the local song repertoire, individual singers, and the specific vocal style of ornamentation in Záhorie. Using source criticism, a repertoire was identified to the extent of 187 songs, recorded from 26 singers in this locality. Particularly useful are the written records of songs by the singers Pavol Pinkava and Agneša Pinkavová. Their song repertoire contains principally ballads, wedding, and dance and love songs. In his studies the collector also gave particular attention to Pavol Pinkava as an individual singer: the records of embellished singing as rendered by this singer are comparable to the records of the singing of Eva Studeničová, an outstanding singer from the village of Moravský sv. Ján in the western part of Záhorie. The records of songs performed by other singers are instructive as regards observation of song variants, and they highlight the contemporary condition and preservation of folk singing in local tradition.

The manuscript collection of Karol Plicka (1894–1987) is one of the most important sources for the Slovak folk song dating from the first half of the 20th century. A prerequisite for the study of this collection is a thoroughgoing source criticism of the song repertoire recorded, which also serves as the starting point for further processing and evaluation. Based on the song material recorded in the Trenčín region (in western Slovakia), we address the issues of classification of the song repertoire in terms of the occasions for singing, the functions of song, and the bearers of song tradition. The aim of the article is to reconstruct the system of song genres which was present in the background to Plicka’s concept of collection, as one of the important aspects of the documentation of traditional singing. Part of this reconstruction is an attempt to distinguish the specific features of Plicka’s work in relation to the particular song categories.

During field research in the Záhorie region the collector Karol Plicka (1894 – 1987) was impressed by the singer Eva Studeničová from the village of Moravský Svätý Ján. Although he published only a small fragment of the songs (43 records), the song collection Eva Studeničová Sings (1928) is the first song monograph in Slovakia on an important bearer of the song tradition. The reconstruction of the complete song repertoire which the collector recorded from this singer relied on both manuscript and published records. The result was a repertoire amounting to 209 songs gathered from this singer. Apart from that, 88 song records which Plicka recorded from other singers in the village have been identified. Together with the songs from Eva Studeničová’s repertoire, this makes a corpus totalling 297 songs, which Plicka documented in this locality.

Karol Plicka (1894–1987) documented a song repertoire from the singer Eva Studeničová in the village of Moravský Svätý Ján in the early 1920s. He regarded this woman as an exceptional figure among singers, who transcended the limits of the local culture. This article is devoted to a reconstruction of the records of songs which Plicka acquired from other singers in this village. The song records not only contribute to comparison of song variants and rendition styles but they also reveal the contemporary condition and preservation of traditional singing in the local culture. Based on source criticism, a song repertoire extending to 88 songs from 12 singers was identified. This song material represents a valuable supplement to Plicka’s register of songs from Eva Studeničová and provides an opportunity to compare the exceptional singer with several bearers of the local song tradition.

The manuscript collection of Slovak folk songs by Karol Plicka includes many valuable song entries, which may be regarded as an important part of the history of transcription of “drawn-out song” in Slovakia. Its core consists of songs sung in the countryside when working in the setting of the mountains and foothills. The acoustics of the setting and the function of song influenced the musical structure and mode of rendering of these songs, which was expressed especially in their specific metric-rhythmic construction. Based on the song entries by Karol Plicka from selected localities of central Považie, where the largest numbers of his entries were taken (Mariková, Dohňany, Lazy pod Makytou), we document the song genres associated with drawn-out song at work in the countryside and we clarify the mode of their transcription, from the viewpoint of this collector.

Heuristic research thus far conducted on the manuscript collection of Karol Plicka (1894–1987) has focused on the region of central Považie in the north-west of Slovakia. Reconstruction of the song repertoire has shown that this collector documented almost 950 songs in total, in 24 localities of this region. The article completes the identification of the regional song corpus with a treatment of the manuscript and published records from the locality of Vieska-Bezdedov (today part of the town of Púchov). Plicka conducted field work in this locality at the inception of his activity in Slovakia. From Plicka’s written records from this locality, we have been able to identify 79 songs and 17 singers, from all generational strata. Almost half of the song records contain multipart singing in group performance (solo – tutti), as one of the style features of regional musical culture. The analysis of this song repertoire has confirmed that Plicka documented traditional folk singing across the entire span of the song genres.
