W artykule zaprezentowane zostały wyniki analizy porównawczej wybranych sondaży nad poczuciem przynależności cywilizacyjnej Polaków oraz stereotypami Polaka i Europejczyka. Głównym kryterium wyboru sondaży był kontekst zachodnioeuropejski oraz europejskość traktowane jako podstawowy punkt odniesienia dla wyrażanego przez respondentów poczucia tożsamości narodowej. Analiza w warstwie teoretycznej odnosi się do modelu opinii publicznej w badaniu tożsamości narodowej w ujęciu Zbigniewa Bokszańskiego. Przeprowadzona analiza zawiera odpowiedzi na pytania o strukturę polskości, jej granice względem europejskości, poczucie swojskości i obcości z mieszkańcami Europy Zachodniej oraz tego, jak zjawiska te zmieniały się w ostatnich 20 latach.

The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of selected polls regarding the civilisational identity of Poles as well as the stereotypes of Poles and Europeans. The main criterion for the selection of the polls is the context of Western Europe and Europeanness treated as a basic point of reference for the sense of national identity expressed by the respondents. The theoretical analysis is based on the model of the public opinion in the study of national identity presented by Zbigniew Bokszański. The analysis provides answers to the questions regarding the structure of Polishness, its borders in relation to Europeanness, the sense of homeliness and strangeness towards the residents of Western Europe, and how these phenomena have changed in the last twenty years.

The study deals with the problem of the significance of history and history attributed to contemporary Polish society in the context of national identity. On the basis of representative surveys from recent years, the author tries to answer the following questions: To what extent Poles are interested in the history of their own country? How much is the history of the national community the source of pride or shame? To what extent is knowledge of history in postulated patriotic attitudes and is at all an important criterion for recognizing someone as a Pole? The conducted analysis leads to the conclusion that the common past is one of the key elements of the contemporary national identity of Poles.

Opracowanie podejmuje problem znaczenia przypisywanego przeszłości i historii przez współczesne społeczeństwo polskie w kontekście tożsamości narodowej. Na podstawie reprezentatywnych badań sondażowych z ostatnich lat autor stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania: W jakim stopniu Polacy interesują się historią własnego kraju? Na ile dzieje własnej wspólnoty narodowej są źródłem dumy bądź wstydu? W jakim stopniu znajomość historii mieści się w postulowanych postawach patriotycznych i w ogóle stanowi istotne kryterium uznania kogoś za Polaka? Przeprowadzona analiza prowadzi do konkluzji, że wspólna przeszłość jest jednym z kluczowych elementów współczesnej tożsamości narodowej Polaków.

The article discusses the relationship between the phenomena clash of cultures and dialogue of cultures. The paper presents the basic theoretical findings on the issue of clash of cultures in the social sciences, and pointed out some examples of the importance of research on the collision of cultures. Also it emphasized tolerance and dialogue aspects of the clash of cultures, which served to discuss the presence of the discussed issues on the basis of communication and intercultural education and in circulation outside the scientific community. Attention was also drawn to the results of clash of cultures, implying a relationship with the dialogue of cultures. Complement argument is the presentation of a concrete example clash of culture – Polishness with Sovietness in 1939–1941 in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic, and the like were present in the elements providing for a possible dialogue.

W artykule zostały omówione związki między zjawiskami zderzenia kultur i dialogu kultur. Zaprezentowano w nim podstawowe ustalenia teoretyczne dotyczące problematyki zderzenia kultur w naukach społecznych, wskazano wybrane przykłady i znaczenie badań nad zderzeniami kultur. Ponadto został zaakcentowany tolerancyjny i dialogotwórczy aspekt zderzenia kultur, czemu posłużyło omówienie obecności poruszanej problematyki na gruncie komunikacji i edukacji międzykulturowej oraz w obiegu pozanaukowym. Zwrócono również uwagę na rezultaty zderzenia kultur implikujące związek z dialogiem kultur. Uzupełnieniem wywodu jest prezentacja konkretnego przykładu zderzenia kulturowego – polskości z sowieckością w latach 1939–1941 na ziemiach wschodnich II RP i tego, jak były w nim obecne elementy świadczące o możliwości podjęcia dialogu międzykulturowego.

The article offers a discussion of the explanatory potential of different theories applied in social sciences in order to provide descriptions and interpretations of intercultural relations. Drawing on the three-dimensional theory of location and author's own categorisation of the problem of culture clash, the author presents an approach which is an attempted compromise between the opposite theoretical perspectives: the universalist ones adopting a generalized outlook, and those that focus on a particular spatial and temporal setting and limit the results of research only to particular cases of cultural contact under consideration.

W artykule poruszono problem zasięgu eksplanacyjnego teorii stosowanych w naukach społecznych służących do opisu i wyjaśniania relacji międzykulturowych. Zaprezentowana, w oparciu o trójwymiarową teorię lokalizacji oraz autorską systematykę problematyki zderzenia kultur, koncepcja jest próbą kompromisowego pogodzenia spotykanych dotąd skrajnych perspektyw teoretyczno-badawczych przyjmujących albo uniwersalistyczny, ogólny charakter, albo też uwarunkowanych określonym kontekstem przestrzennym i tym samym zawężających wyniki badań jedynie do analizowanego przypadku kontaktu kulturowego osadzonego w określonych współrzędnych czasowo-przestrzennych.

The paper presents the theoretical and methodological foundations for studying the historical case of the clash between Polish and Soviet cultures on the eastern lands of the II Republic of Poland in 1939−1941. The study, based on secondary sources (memoirs), was conducted using the biographical method. The first part of the paper dwells on the historical context of the study covering the period of the first Soviet occupation, as well as presents the adopted theoretical perspective – the category of clash of cultures. In the second part, the sources used in the research are characterized, as well as the way of using the biographical method and the course of the research procedure are presented. The most important results of the case study of culture clash based on the biographical method are introduced in the conclusion.

Artykuł prezentuje założenia teoretyczne i metodologiczne badania historycznego przypadku zderzenia między kulturą polską i sowiecką na ziemiach wschodnich II Rzeczypospolitej w latach 1939–1941. Badania przeprowadzono metodą biograficzną, bazując na zastanym materiale pamiętnikarskim. W pierwszej części przybliżono kontekst historyczny przedmiotu badań – pierwszą okupację sowiecką, oraz przyjętą perspektywę teoretyczną – kategorię zderzenia kultur. W części drugiej scharakteryzowano wykorzystane w badaniach źródła, sposób wykorzystania metody biograficznej oraz przebieg procedury badawczej. W zakończeniu artykułu zaprezentowano najważniejsze rezultaty badania wybranego przypadku zderzenia kultur metodą biograficzną.
