This paper discusses the process of the globalization of culture in the light of Pitirim Sorokin's cultural theory. Author of the paper draws parallels between the historical periods of the globalization process and Sorokin's three types of cultures: ideational, sensate and idealistic. The paper is produced on the basis of presentation given at the conference Culture Dialogue: Austria and Latvia's culture and literature in international and interdisciplinary discourse, held on 28 September 2006 in the Faculty of Modern Languages of the University of Latvia.
