The beginning of the history of Polish language as a language studies branch date from the works of Aleksander Brückner and Jan Baudouin de Courtenay. The history of this discipline can be divided into three periods: earlygrammatical, structuralisticly-sociologic and sociolinguisticly-communicative. The modern language history was subject to such transformations as general language studies, which are considered as one of the branches of science that are used to interpret the sphere culture.

Beginning from the 70’s and the 80’s it’s been substituted with terms such as general language, general Polish language, nationwide language in consequence of transitions that underwent during the II World War and in the period directly it ensuing. The author has been for a longer time making excerpts from church hymns used in Roman Catholic priests’ prayers (breviaries) and liturgy, as well as in church songs. The excerpted material relates to (artistic) designations of Mother of God, Christ, Holy Ghost, and the Saints (cf. footnotes in the article). In this way, the article describes the names of persons in the Holy Trinity. The collection is of use as philological documentation, for historical research in European and Polish piety, and as help for preachers, religious instructors, and Christian literary authors.

Walka rewolucyjna w zaborze rosyjskim. Fakty i wrażenia z ostatnich lat dziesięciu (Revolutionary fi ght under the Russian rule. Facts and impressions over the last ten years) is a memorial feature article by Józef Piłsudski presenting the preparation, print, and distribution of the Polish Socialist Party’s underground pamphlets that were illegal under the Russian rule. The text is written in standard general Polish of the turn of the 20th century with a minor share of north borderland regionalisms, idiolectisms, and historisms. The style of the work combines “facts and impressions”, that is a realistic narration with a fictionalised description of various events related to the distribution of underground publications. The author of the feature article presents himself to the reader as an educated person using a language characterised by familiarity with the journalistic style.

The past hundred years of the development of the Polish language, i.e. the period 1918-2018, is distinguished primarily for commemorative reasons connected with regaining independence by Poland after 123 years of partitions. It turns out, however, that the century can be easily captured in linguistic categories. As regards periodisation of the history of Polish, it encompasses the last four phases of the Modern Polish period, which are determined by a coincidence of six sociolinguistic trends and fi ve major system development trends based on more than 150 processes and specifi c changes.

Rok 1920 (1920) is the most extensive text by Józef Piłsudski. The image of the author inferred from the linguistic features of the text is one of a typical user of general Polish in the interwar period, that is a representative of the Polish intelligentsia of those days. The idiolectal and regional characteristics are infrequent or occasional (in the phonetic, grammatical, and lexical layers). The stylistics of the treaty is primarily the stylistics of a realistic description and the author’s narrative, used effi ciently and displaying a great narrative talent and the knowledge of realities.

The union concluded at the Sejm meeting held in Lublin in 1569 established common institutions of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, thus creating the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which survived until 1795. Apart from the ruler elected jointly by the nobility of both countries, it established the common Sejm, foreign and defence policies, and the common coin. The army, treasury, legal systems, administration, and judiciary remained separate. From the philological point of view, the following markers are substantial for characterising the Union of Lublin act: the Polish language of the text and its stylistic affi nity, diversity of the forms of the names of the document signatories, text composition and its offi cial and rhetoric style markers determining its informative and persuasive functions.

Periodisations of history are usually presented in synthesising studies. Analysis of the hitherto periodisations of the history of the Polish language enables compilation of a summary proposition, which includes also the recent history of Polish (since 1939). Its internal periodisation is based on the following criteria: 1) record of qualitative intra-linguistic changes; 2) hierarchy of intralinguistic development trends of the system of the Polish language; 3) system of sociolinguistic trends; 4) infl uences of extra-linguistic and non-linguistic processes.
