The history of Ukrainian philosophy in the 20th century: finding the subject or finding the discipline?

The article deals with the evolution of the history of Ukrainian philosophy as an academic discipline from the perspective of its establishers’ precept, the precept about the object of national philosophy. The author considers that the determined search for the object led to methodological solutions which stimulated and directed the development of the discipline in the 20th century and which are shaping the prospect of its development today, when the problem of the history of the Ukrainian philosophy object turned into the problem of the research methodology of philosophical phenomena discovered during its existence. According to the author, applying of the Methodology of Historism is the condition for real philosophical investigation into these phenomena within the national culture.

Історію наукової дисципліни можна писати у різні способи — історіографія традиційного штибу подає її як історію послідовного нагромадження та систематизації знань про певний предмет, історія ідей розкриває конфлікти та протистояння, в перебігу яких ті відбувалися. Історії філософії України як наукової дисципліни сьогодні часто надають вигляду поступового розвитку, що відбувався всупереч ідеологічному тискові, а теоретичні суперечки та суперечності, які зумовлювали її розвиток, ретроспективно зводять до суто зовнішніх несприятливих чинників. Такому поглядові сприяє те, що по закінченні «короткого ХХ сторіччя» історія філософії України як наукова дисципліна опинилася в ситуації «нормальної науки», якщо скористатися виразом Томаса Куна. Загальновизнаними науковими досягненнями, на які спирається ця «нормальна наука», вона завдячує як радянським науковцям, так і їхнім опонентам з української діаспори, хоча і ті, і ті працювали за умов ідеологічного протистояння та були помітно ідеологічно заанґажованими. Сьогоднішнє «примирення» їхніх позицій створює ілюзію подібного «самого по собі розв’язання» й інших суперечностей історії дисципліни, відсуваючи на задній план зокрема той факт, що багато суто наукових припущень і настанов шанованих сьогодні foun ding fathers дисципліни так і не набули розвитку. В цій статті я маю на меті розглянути еволюцію історії філософії України як науко воїдисципліни крізь призму однієї з таких настанов — щодо предмета історії національної філософії. На мою думку, наполегливі пошуки такого предмета генерували методологічні розв’язання, які стимулювали та спрямовували розвиток дисципліни у ХХ сторіччі, а сьогодні окреслюють перспективи її подальшого розвитку.

Europe is defined in the paper as one of the leading subjects of neo-European political philosophy which cannot be thought beyond its practical dimension; in theoretical aspect the core of the European problem is the universal character of European values, while in the practical one that is the realization of those universal values in the political order. The problem of the unity and diversity of Europe in the both aspects is a motive power of the modern European history; in political aspect it passes from the unity of European nations in a single civilization to deny the values and belongings in favour of a single civilization. The author also analyses the problems of formation of the young European nations, Ukraine in particular, in the present conditions.

The author clarifies what is the value of the literary work for different genres of the history of philosophy and the conditions, under which literature may consist a proper subject of historical-philosophical analysis.

The exchange of opinions between the author and Ukrainian translator of 'Popular Statement of Political Philosophy' touches specificity of this work and political philosophy stated in it, in particular, political philosophy and life of the community, role of politics in human life, specificity of French philosophy, place in it of the method of philosophizing personified by P. Manent following R. Aron. The problem of European modernism is one of the central problems for today's political philosophy in the opinion of both interlocutors; its solution, with respect to the specificity of each European country, should propose all the European countries a certain political perspective, which search is now the aim of not only politics but also intellectuals and all the European community.

Кожне нове видання творів Григорія Сковороди (1722–1794) традиційно стимулює інтерес науковців до його життя і творчості. Перше науково-критичне видання творів Сковороди, здійснене до сторіччя його смерті професором Дмитром Багалієм, породило цілу хвилю досліджень постаті філософа наприкінці ХІХ — на початку ХХ сторіччя. Зусилля радянських дослідників Сковороди мали результатом підготовлені Інститутом філософії АН УРСР видання його творів 1961-го, а потім і 1973 року. На них виросли генерації сучасних сковородинознавців. Ці видання стали підґрунтям для перекладів творів Сковороди російською (Москва, 1973) та українською (Київ, 1994) мовами.

Essential changes in the public space of philosophical discourse make the basic subject of the round table. In particular, the thought is emphasized that social networks, being a virtual phenomenon of simulacrum distribution, do not turn into the factor of democratization but only become a tool of communication strategies. Hence the question arises about democracy institutionalization. The contemporary European institutions function on the basis of consensus of regulations and dis-sensus of peoples, contradiction between political behavior and civil participation. Poor formulation of problems, excessive specialization, taboo for negative, conditions of excessive intellectual consumption and representation crisis — all that arises as a sum of epiphenomena and as a threat to modern democracy.

Олів’є Монжен — французький письменник-есеїст, філософ, соціолог, починаючи з 1988 року керівник ле- гендарного часопису «Esprit», відомий видавець, віцепре зидент Синдикату культурної і наукової преси Франції, кавалер ордена Почесного леґіону. Українською мовою було видано його книгу «Виклики скептицизму. Зміни інтелектуального пейзажу Франції» (Дух і Літера, 2011). У травні 2013 року в рамках III Міжнародного фестивалю «Книжковий Арсенал» було презентовано книгу Олів’є Монжена «Виклики скептицизму». Саме тоді за ініціативою Інституту філософії НАНУ і часопису «Філософська думка» відбулася зустріч Олів'є Монжена з українськими філософами, яка увінчалася яскравою дискусією. Говорили про ґлобалізацію і загальнокультурні журнали, про історичну пам'ять і роль майданів, про Сократа і Тимоті Снайдера.

The publication contains the speeches of participants of presentation of the book “Vilen Horskyi: touches, meanings, contemplations”, published in Kyiv in 2011 (edited by Maryna Tkachuk; compiled by Maryna Tkachuk and Liudmyla Arkhypova). The publication was dedicated to 80th anniversary of Vilen Horskyi (27.10.1931—27.05.2007), a notable Ukrainian philosopher and historian of philosophy, doctor of sciences in philosophy, professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine. The speeches emphasize a significant value of the presented book in the development of philosophical culture in Ukraine; they also represent Horskyi’s unique image as a scientist, educator and the Person.
