While comparing the new Dictionary of Polish Dialects with other Polish dictionaries the authors paid attention to some characteristic differences which gave rise to theoretical as well as methodological considerations. Any comparison of a dialectal dictionary with dictionaries of the literary language (current and Old Polish) shows that in the first case we deal with multiple lexical systems while in the latter - with one system only. This results in a multitude of forms and meanings in the dialectal dictionary, and their limited number in the dictionaries of the literary language. On the other hand a comparison of the new Dictionary of Polish Dialects with an older one, compiled by Jan Karłowicz exhibits differences in the scope of the presented material end in editorial methods. The authors of the present paper recall the old postulates of Kazimierz Nitsch (expressed in his review of the Dictionary of Polish Dialects by Jan Karłowicz) and discuss the methods of their application in the new Dictionary of Polish Dialects. The concluding statistics shows that the new Dictionary of Polish Dialects contains three times more entries than the Dictionary of Polish Dialects by J. Karłowicz and almost twice as many as the PAN Polish Language Dictionary edited by W. Doroszewski. The new Dictionary is thus the richest collection of Polish lexicon.
