The article contains an analysis of principles of trade policy stipulated in the statutes of GATT from the point of view of conditions of Poland’s participation in GATT. Hence the structure of the article, that is to say the article is divided into two parts. In the first part the author characterizes the principles of trade policy themselves as formulated in the statutes of GATT. This refers obviously to basic instruments of trade policy i.e. the most-favoured nation treatment, customs tariffs, and quota restrictions. This analysis makes it possible to pass to the second part, in which there are discussed conditions of Poland’s participation in GATT, and possibilities of negotiating their newer form. The analysis ends with the Tokyo Round, the debates of which were still in progress when this article was being written.

Today services play quite a significant, role in international trade alongside goods. This refers to services connected not only with such spheres as banking or transport but also with telecommunications and the right to patents. This is best confirmed by the fact that during the negotiations taking place within the Uruguay Round (started in 1986) besides negotiations concerning products a great deal of attention Is devoted to international trade in services. That problem was advanced by the United States as one of topics for multilateral trade negotiations carried within the framework of GATT. Hence it seemed justified to discuss this problem in the present article. It was divided Into two parts, with the first of them dealing with reasons leading to the new round of multilateral trade negotiations within GATT. It analyzes the stances taken by particular countries taking part in the negotiations and points at their divergences. The second part deals with International trade in services tackled in greater detail, and it points at the necessity of regulating and liberating it. An attempt has been also made to analyze implications of liberalization of trade in services from the viewpoint of Poland's interests

The authors have made an attempt at evaluating long-term prospects for production and export of light-industry products against the background of structural changes taking place in the world economy and in the international trade. Two phenomena deserve special attenation here. First of all, the increased role played by developing countrlea as producers and, first of all, as exporters of light-industry products based on cheap labour and their own raw materials base in many cases. The processes of transferring labour-intensive production from highly developed to developing countries are becoming more and more intensified. A group of new and relatively big producers includes such countries as Hongkong, Taiwan, South Korea. Brasil etc. On the other hand, there occur substantial technological changes in the light industry, which consist in more economical use of raw materials and decreasing role of natural components being replaced by synthetic components.
