Playing with reader’s fear is one of the objectives of fantastic literature. The present study, analysing two traditional fantastic motifs: of a ghost and of a dream, indicates the importance of time and space in Anne Duguël’s novels Gargouille and Le corridor. Particular attention was drawn to two space structures inextricably linked with time: the haunted house in Gargouille and the dream world in Le corridor. The aim of this analysis is to show how the author uses chronotope in order to arouse the reader’s fear. Key words: fear, neofantastic, ghost, dream, Anne Duguël

The objective of this article is to examine how the classic fantastic motif of metamorphosis is used by Anne Richter, a Belgian writer and theorist of women’s fantastic, not only to arouse fear in the reader but also to raise women’s issues, particularly marriage. Using studies by fantastic literature theorists (including Labbé, Millet, Malrieu, Prince and Richter), as well as feminist critique texts (Cixous, de Beauvoir, Kristeva), the author analyses the motif of metamorphosis in two of Richter’s stories – Sul passo dell’Arno [Over the Arno Pass] and Un sommeil de plante [The Sleep of Plants] – showing the interweaving of classic elements of a fantastic work with the “extraordinary nature of women” and their womanhood.

Korzystając z opracowań teoretyków literatury fantastycznej (m.in. Labbé, Millet, Malrieu, Prince, Richter) oraz tekstów krytyki feministycznej (Cixous, de Beauvoir, Kristeva), autorka artykułu poddaje analizie motyw metamorfozy w Sul passo dell’Arno i Un sommeil de plante – dwóch opowiadaniach Richter, wskazując przeplatanie się klasycznych elementów utworu fantastycznego z „niezwykłą naturą kobiety” i jej kobiecością.

The article demonstrates the connections between motherhood and the feeling of loss experienced by a woman and a mother in Marie Petitcuénot's autobiographical novel, Ce qui gronde (2021). Based on a feminist critical approach, on care theory and on psychoanalytic theories, the study presents how motherhood affects the feminine and maternal identity and examines how Marie Petitcuénot manages to find herself through writing. The impact of motherhood on her life and her feminine/maternal identity is analyzed through her experience of childbirth, the postpartum period and her family daily routine, which affects her the most.

Maternality, according to Hyvrard, is concerned not only with childbirth, but in particular with the whole mental universe of the mother and with the physical, psychic, social and cultural changes in her life. The article shows these changes and analyses the emotional ambiguity of two single mothers, protagonists of Carole Fives’ Tenir jusqu’à l’aube (2018) and Adeline Fleury’s Ida n’existe pas (2020). Based on feminist critical approach (Kristeva, Irigaray) and on psychoanalytic theories (Guéritault), the analysis demonstrates that their negative emotions and their rejection of motherhood originates from maternal burn-out. The complexity of this feeling, which results from the maternal function and from the particular situation of the mothers in question, is demonstrated, among others, by their depersonalisation, their isolation and their contradictory emotions towards the child.
