The words ‘transcendence’ and ‘participation’ comprised in the title of the article suggest a particular vantage point on Karol Wojtyła’s understanding of man and society. The main claim of the article is that transcendence and participation are the key concepts Wojtyła used in his effort to explain the mystery of the human person. The Cracow philosopher argued that by virtue of his very nature, man–person is able to transcend himself and the world towards the truth he learns, as well as to fulfill himself by developing relationships with other people. The underestimation of the importance of these two fundamental aspects of the person has led to numerous misunderstandings in the history of human thought. The perspective for the considerations the article comprises has been determined by Tadeusz Styczeń’s paper “Być sobą to przekraczać siebie: O antropologii Karola Wojtyły” [To Be Oneself is to Transcend Oneself: On the Anthropology of Karol Wojtyła]. The present article provides a philosophical commentary on two of its sections: “Być sobą to rządzić się prawdą” [To Be Oneself is to Govern Oneself with Truth] and “Być sobą to być solidarnym z każdym drugim” [To Be Oneself is to Live in Solidarity with Others]. The article is a modified version of the paper delivered during the seminar “On Personal Identity and Transcendence: Insights into the Ideas put forward by Tadeusz Styczeń in his ‘Być sobą to przekraczać siebie,’” held by the John Paul II Institute at the Catholic University of Lublin on 13 December 2019.

Zawarte w tytule artykułu słowa ,,transcendencja” i ,,uczestnictwo” wskazują na szczególną perspektywę postrzegania człowieka i świata społecznego przez Karola Wojtyłę. Zasadnicza teza artykułu jest wyrazem przekonania, że obydwa te pojęcia tworzą klucz, za pomocą którego autor Osoby i czynu wyjaśniał tajemnicę człowieka jako osoby. W swoich tekstach Wojtyła dowodził, że człowiek-osoba na mocy swojej natury zdolny jest do przekraczania siebie i świata w kierunku poznawanej prawdy, jak również do spełniania samego siebie w relacji do innych osób. Niedocenienie tych dwóch podstawowych wymiarów osoby doprowadziło w historii do wielu nieporozumień. Optykę prowadzonych przez autora artykułu rozważań wyznacza tekst Tadeusza Stycznia Być sobą to przekraczać siebie. O antropologii Karola Wojtyły. Artykuł stanowi niejako filozoficzny komentarz do dwóch części tekstu: „Być sobą to rządzić się prawdą” oraz „Być sobą to być solidarnym z każdym drugim”. Artykuł stanowi zmienioną wersję referatu przedstawionego podczas sesji naukowej „Tożsamość i transcendencja osoby. Inspiracje pracą prof. Tadeusza Stycznia SDS Być sobą to przekraczać siebie” zorganizowanej przez Instytut Jana Pawła II na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim Jana Pawła II 13 grudnia 2019 roku.
