The presence of foreigners in Poland is yet a relatively unexplored phenomenon and an interesting research area. Since the transformation and the Polish accession to the European Union there has been an upward trend towards an increase of population of immigrants recently (within the last couple of years). It is self-evident that vast majority of migration is into cities. Therefore, the activity of foreigners contributes both to the social and structural changes. This article aims to present spatial distribution of foreigners in city of Poznań. The article presents the results of research on patterns of settlement of foreigners in city of Poznań from 2000–2012.

Obecność cudzoziemców w Polsce jest zjawiskiem wciąż stosunkowo nowym i niezbadanym. Okres transformacji i akcesja Polski do Unii Europejskiej to wydarzenia, które zdecydowały o nasileniu się napływu imigrantów do Polski. Większość współczesnych migracji, również w Polsce, odbywa się do miast. Naturalne i zrozumiałe jest zatem, że obecność obcokrajowców wywiera coraz większy wpływ na sytuację gospodarczą i społeczno-demograficzną kraju oraz wiąże się z wieloma zmianami w wymiarze społecznym i strukturalnym miasta. Niniejsze opracowanie ma na celu przedstawienie wzorców osiedlania się obcokrajowców w Poznaniu w ujęciu przestrzennym. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań dotyczących miejsc osiedlania się cudzoziemców w Poznaniu w latach: 2000, 2005, 2010 i 2012.

Since the political transformation and the Polish accession to the European Union, there has recently been an upward trend towards an increase of the population of immigrants (within the last couple of years). The vast majority of migration is into cities. Therefore, the activity of foreigners contributes both to the social and structural changes and raises several questions about their socio-spatial assimilation. This article aims to present the spatial distribution of foreigners in the city of Poznań. The article presents the results of research on patterns of the settlement of foreigners (temporary and permanent residence) in the city of Poznań from 1999 to 2011.

There has been an upward trend towards an increase of their population recently (within the last couple of years). It is self-evident that vast majority of migration is into cities. Therefore, the activityof foreigners contributes both to the social and structural changes and raises several questions about their socio-spatial assimilation. The attitudes of Poles towards aliens seem to be particularlyinteresting as well as ambiguous. Research and studies suggest that in large part the attitudes of Poles towards foreigners result from ethnic stereotypes and ignorance of other cultures. Hence, the signs of xenophobia are sometimes observed. However, more and more powerful process of globalization have been decreasing the importance of these stereotypes. There is an increasing interest in the problem of migration in Poland as well as a greater awareness and “openness to the world” shaped byper sonal experience, travels and media. This article aims to present a studyon the opinions and attitudes of the residents of the cityof Poznan (Poland) towards foreigners. The issues of the relationship in the direct vicinityand dayto dayhuman intercourse with foreigners in the Polish societyis going to be examined (e.g., the respondents were asked to identifythe characteristics associated with the selected groups of foreigners). Moreover, the research aims to indicate and assess factors that maycause aversion to foreigners. The data and information gathered with the use of the questionnaire will be presented in the conference speech. This will show the extent to which residents of Poznań are willing to accept foreigners in their own environment, including the question of their integration and isolation.

Od kilkunastu lat obserwowana jest znacząca tendencja wzrostowa ruchów migracyjnych do Polski. Mimo, że obecność obcokrajowców w naszym kraju jest zjawiskiem coraz bardziej powszechnym, to jednak wciąż stosunkowo nieznanym i niezbadanym. Szczególnie ciekawe wydają się postawy Polaków wobec cudzoziemców. Celem niniejszej pracy jest prezentacja wyników badań dotyczących opinii na temat obecności obcokrajowców w Poznaniu, przeprowadzonych w Poznaniu w 2011 r.

ABSTRAKT: Od kilkunastu lat ruchy migracyjne w  Polsce zaczynają odgrywać coraz istotniejszą rolę, a obecność obcokrajowców ma coraz większy wpływ na dynamicznie zmieniającą się sytuację społeczno-ekonomiczną. Duże miasta są głównym celem migracji, także w Polsce, w związku z czym zasadne wydaje się określenie sylwetki obcokrajowca i zidentyfikowanie jego roli w społeczności dużego miasta, na przykładzie Poznania. Taki też jest cel niniejszego opracowania, który zrealizowany będzie poprzez omówienie trzech wymiarów funkcjonowania cudzoziemców w Poznaniu: 1. identyfikacja kraju pochodzenia, 2. identyfikacja motywów przyjazdu, 3. identyfikacja stylów życia w mieście. Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie wyników badań dotyczących opinii obcokrajowców na temat życia w Poznaniu. Przez długi czas w świadomości obcokrajowców funkcjonował obraz Polski jako kraju biednego, nieatrakcyjnego do życia. Statystyki i badania wydają się natomiast świadczyć o zmianach w postrzeganiu Poznania.

ABSTRACT: There has been an upward trend towards an increase of migration to Poland recently which contributes to an increasing impact on the rapidly changing socio-economic situation. It is self-evident that vast majority of migration is into cities, also in Poland. Due to this phenomena, it seems reasonable to identify the profile of a foreigner and his role in a community of a big city, for example in Poznan. The aim of this article, will be implemented through the analysis of the three dimensions of the presence of foreigners in Poznan: 1. identification of the country of origin of foreigners, 2. identification of the motives of coming 3. identification of ways of life in the city. This article aims to present the results of study on opinion of foreigners about life in Poznan. In the consciousness of foreigners has functioned image of Poland as a poor country, not attractive enough to live. Statistics and studies seem to indicate a change in the perception of Poznan.
