In the Year of Faith announced by Benedict XVI, while the ecumenical movement commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Lima Statement on “Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry”, the article aims to show the difficulties in the reception of the document. The first part presents the basic principles by which the Catholic Church evaluates the Lima Document. The second part indicates some positive elements of the Lima Text. The third part is devoted to difficulties related to the doctrinal statements of the text. The last part presents the current status and possibilities for further theological work on the Lima Document.

Druga część wskazuje elementy pozytywne Dokumentu z Limy, wymieniając najpierw zbieżności ogólne stwierdzeń tekstu z doktryną katolicką, a następnie – stosownie do podziału dokumentu – przedstawiając zbieżności w doktrynie i praktyce chrzcielnej, w doktrynie i praktyce eucharystycznej oraz w rozumieniu posługiwania duchownego.
According to the Catholic doctrine, apostolic succession is necessarily and essentially related to the ministry in the Church. The most important sign and the guarantee of Apostolic succession is the unbroken succession of bishops which are the successors of the Apostles. The situation of the Church of Sweden is unique: it has a historic episcopate but it has adopted the Lutheran doctrine of the sacraments and of the Church. For this reason, the Catholic Church does not recognise the validity of the Swedish Lutheran ordinations. For the same reason, it can not accept the existence of Apostolic succession within the Church of Sweden.

The article presents a specific ecclesiastical interpretation of the Bible within Orthodox theology and shows some difficulties of this approach from the point of view of Western theological thought. The article discusses the problem of the Orthodox biblical canon and the main difficulties associated with the division between „canonical” and „non-canonical” books. Then the text presents specific elements of Orthodox biblical exegesis, with emphasis on the community of the Church as its primary context. The article also touches the problem of biblical language, and especially importance attached to the text of the Septuagint as well as critical evaluation of certain modern translations of the Bible by Orthodox theologians. The text reveals the elements of the Orthodox approach to the interpretation of the Bible that are valuable for all Christian theological traditions as well as the main theological problems related to it.

According to the Holy Bible, God gives us unceasingly his grace in order to liberate humanity from sin and death. One of the most fundamental Christistian beliefs – which expresses the absolute primacy of God’s salvific will – says that God’s grace is necessary for salvation. The doctrine of divine grace was the main topic of the theological discussion between St. Augustine and Pelagius. The Augustinian doctrine presented clear opposition between the omnipotence of God’s grace and the weakness of the sinner. Augustine’s teachings prevailed in the Catholic doctine, although without its extremities. Meanwhile in the East, the Pelagian controversy was not understood and the Augustine’s doctrine of divine grace was not accepted. The Eastern theology speaks of synergism as a divine-human salvific cooperation. Is this not a Pelagian denial of the absolute salvific primacy of God? To answer this question, the article seeks the notion of divine grace in the doctrine of the Orthodox Church. The concept of God’s grace is in this doctrine associated with the concept of deification (theosis). Essentially, God’s grace is the same as God’s uncreated energies. It is some kind of active presence of the Holy Trinity in the world. Its manifestations are the sacraments of the Church. Its aim is the final fulfillment of human destiny and of the world. Man’s free will is also an important gift of grace. God’s salvific action toward mankind leads to theosis which is the purpose of human life. It is achievable only through a synergy (cooperation) between human will and God’s uncreated energies. The omnipotence of God’s grace does not destroy human freedom, because freedom of the human will itself is a God’s gift. The Orthodox doctrine of synergism, however, does not distinguish clearly God’s grace and human freedom. Man’s salvation is possible through the cooperation of grace and freedom, although ultimately divine Providence leads mankind to eternal fulfillment. There are still some important doctrinal differences between Catholic and Orthodox theologies. The Eastern thought emphasises the deification of man and the ultimate goal of the human life. The Catholic doctrine is more practical: it seeks the way of salvation for a sinner. However, it does not mean that these two concepts are totally incompatible. They both are based on the main Christian idea of God’s love toward mankind. The most important expression of this redemptive and salvific love is Christ’s Cross and Resurrection.
The article discusses the issue of the evolution of subjects in the ecumenical movement. At the beginning the ecumenical discourse was dominated by doctrinal issues, whereas today social, political and ethical themes stand at its forefront. This demonstrates the richness of the Gospel, in which a believer can find responses to questions about his or her everyday life; on the other hand, ecumenism is here in danger of forgetting its primary purpose. The article ends with a conclusion that ecumenism should be involved in the current social and ethical debates, but to preserve its identity it should focus on the Gospel of Jesus as the ultimate criterion.

The article discusses the relevance of the Chalcedonian dogma of Christian anthropology. The context of the discussion is the Western theologians’ pursuit of new forms of expression of the faith. However, the Chalcedonian Christological doctrine is not outdated. The truth of faith that Jesus Christ is True God and True Man has its important anthropological implications. This dogma constitutes the foundation of the Christian teaching on the human dignity.
Although the Russian Orthodox Church participates in the activities of the ecumenical movement, it remains sceptical about the evolution of Western Christianity, mainly Protestantism. In particular, attempts to challenge traditional dogmatic and ethical formulations are unacceptable. The Russian Orthodox criticism goes even further when it reveals the sources of the rejection of church tradition in early Protestant theology. In this context, the article presents the main elements of the contemporary Russian Orthodox critique of the Reformation’s rejection of tradition as an authoritative source of Christian faith. The first part outlines the theological and ideological specificity of the Russian Orthodox discourse on the Reformation. The second part presents the Orthodox concept of the authority of tradition in the Church as a starting point for the criticism of the Reformation. The third part discusses the main elements of the criticism of the reformatory concept of “sola Scriptura,” with particular emphasis on its socio-political reasons and consequences.

Chociaż Rosyjska Cerkiew Prawosławna uczestniczy w działalności ruchu ekumenicznego, to jednak pozostaje ona sceptyczna wobec kierunku rozwoju chrześcijaństwa zachodniego, głównie protestantyzmu. Sprzeciw budzą zwłaszcza próby zakwestionowania tradycyjnych ujęć dogmatycznych i etycznych. Krytyka prawosławna sięga jednak dalej, aż do źródeł zakwestionowania tradycji kościelnej we wczesnej teologii protestanckiej.
The post-conciliar Catholic theology in the West is experiencing a significant crisis of its identity. Theologians take an active part in the contemporary social and political discourse but their academic work is often in opposition to the doctrinal and moral teaching of the Catholic Church. In the document Theology Today issued in 2012, the International Theological Commission presents a positive image of Catholic theology. The document indicates the basic criteria of Catholic theology. It also emphasises the relationship of theology with the living Christian faith and the vocation of theologians to preach the faith. The document points out that authentic Catholic theologyis impossible without fidelity to the Church and to its authoritative teaching.
In the article the emphasis will be put on the reinterpretations of Jesus's Cross in political theologies whose developed forms are liberation theology and feminist theology. The article will consider the reasons which compelled the representatives of these lines of theological thinking to question traditional staurologies and to suggest new attempts of reflection on the Cross. Further, I will present typical for these movements attempts of ahistorical and ideological theology of the Cross along with their consequences for the Christian faith. Finally, an attempt will be made to answer the question whether all the presented attempts of political reinterpretation of the Cross could be called `staurologies', that is an exhaustive and systematic theological approach to all that is contained in Jesus's death for Christians, or whether they are of a different nature.

This article is aimed at presenting a certain limited and at the same time significant area on which such cultural and political pressure is exerted, i.e. the Churches’ language policies. The issue of language policy, which is seen as a symbol of actions undertaken for the sake of gender equality in church life, will be presented based on the example of the Lutheran Churches. This is because it is Lutherans who, in recent years, have been the most committed to promoting equality between, and equal rights for, women and men (especially in North America) in social, economic and political life as well as within the Church’s structures. The article begins with a presentation of the issue of gender justice in modern mainstream Lutheranism. Then the role of church language for this trend in the Church is shown as a tool in the fight for gender justice and for eliminating inequalities as well as negative stereotypes. Next, the official recommendations of the largest Lutheran Churches in North America are presented concerning the purification of church language and containing guidelines on its proper, nondiscriminatory use. Finally, an attempt is made at presenting the results of Lutheran language policy.

The issue of women’s dignity and their place in the community of the Church is of particular importance in contemporary ecumenical thought. This problem has remained an important area of concern of the World Council of Churches since the very beginning of the organization which was the first Assembly in Amsterdam (1948). This continuous concern of the ecumenical movement has been accompanied by the significant social, political, religious and economic changes in the world. The article examines some founding demands of the World Council of Churches concerning the place of women in the church to answer the question of whether (and to what extent) the WCC has satisfied these demands in its own structures, institutions and policies and in the life of its member churches.

Zagadnienie godności kobiet i wynikającego z niej należnego im miejsca w Kościele zajmuje ważne miejsce w refleksji ekumenicznej.
The question of the ordination of women not only separates Christian denominations. It becomes increasingly divisive within individual churches and communities. This is why the problem of women’s ordination remains in the contemporary ecumenical movement one of the most difficult issues to deal with. Although it has been fully accepted in many Christian churches and communities, other Christian groups still oppose to adopt this practice and its theological justification. A Christian ecumenical discussion on this topic involves many specific questions related to various branches of theology and ethics. This article aims to present the anthropological context of the debate. The issue of women’s ordination and its relation to church tradition is frequently addressed from the point of view of Christian anthropology and ethics. Therefore the article in intended to show that above-mentioned controversy is rooted in different understanding of human dignity, especially when it comes to its connection to church tradition and to contemporary social phenomena.

Dlatego też problem ordynacji kobiet pozostaje we współczesnym ruchu ekumenicznym jednym z najtrudniejszych tematów do refleksji.
The article is an analysis of Patriarch Kirill’s speech at the assembly of the Inter- Parliamentary Union (IPU) in St. Petersburg. It primarily discusses the demand for moral consensus, which is a condition for just laws and true peace. The article starts with a presentation of the specific political and religious context affecting the interpretation of both the IPU assembly in St. Petersburg and Patriarch Kirill’s speech. Subsequently, the author presents the Patriarch’s criticism of the liberal system of values and the conditions of genuine moral consensus; he also discusses the role of religion in reaching this consensus.

The author seeks to underline these elements of Saint Thomas Aquinas’ teaching on the necessity of divine grace which concern the fundamental theological issues of the Reformation. A brief analysis of Luther’s idea about Scholastic theology and his reasons for rejection of the Catholic doctrine on grace, in the light of Aquinas’ teaching, indicates that Luther probably did not know the original thought of Doctor Angelicus. The article consists of two parts. The first is devoted to Luther’s rejection of Scholastic theology and the problem of Luther’s knowledge of Aquinas’ works. The second part presents Aquinas’ theses on the necessity of divine grace which coincide with some Luther’s theological intuitions.

The idea of dialogue in philosophical and theological anthropology emphasizes the dignity proper to each human being as a person, and also the human social nature. In the 20th century many humanists rediscovered the idea of interpersonal dialogue. In the philosophical thought this idea is present in the works of Jewish thinkers: Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig and Emmanuel Levinas. But the notion of dialogue can also be useful in Chrisitian theological language. The article looks at the notion of dialogue in the definition of the relationship between God and human beings from the perspective of Christian Personalism. A “dialogically oriented theology” shows the relationship between God and man as a dialogue based on divine grace. The dignity of every human person is rooted in the vocation to dialogue with the persons of the Holy Trinity. This dialogue with God defines human beings in their relation to the world. The dialogue goes far beyond everyday life and finds its fulfillment in eternal dialogue with God and with the community of the redeemed.
This article presents some elements of the Alexandrian pre-Nicene theology, and especially Origen’s theological thought. This is not a comprehensive analysis from the perspective of patristics. The article’s aim is to present some significant methodological insights resulting from Origen’s theology. In his way of dealing with theology there are several outdated ideas related to the Hellenistic cultural context and to Platonic philosophy. Origen’s thought, however, also presents many ideas which are relevant to contemporary theological methodology: priority of Holy Scripture, christological reading of the Bible and the recognition of the holiness of Scripture which exceeds all human intellectual capacity.
On the 5th of July 2013 the Holy See has released the first encyclical of Pope Francis Lumen fidei (dated 25th of June). A few days earlier, on the 19th of June 2013 in Berlin representatives of the Lutheran Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) have presented a comprehensive document Zwischen Autonomie und Angewiesenheit. The article discusses the importance of the family as the environment of faith as presented in both documents. There are significant differences of the theological perspective between them. The Lutheran document presents new models of family life which differ from the traditional image of the Christian family. The encyclical emphasise the role of the traditionally-understood family, based on marriage of a man and a woman, in the transmission of the faith to children. The article shows the importance of these different perspectives and ecumenical difficulties which arise from them.
Problem ten został ukazany na przykładzie działalności największej organizacji ekumenicznej – Światowej Rady Kościołów, założonej w 1948 r., gromadzącej większość chrześcijańskich Kościołów i Wspólnot. Autor artykułu omawia elementy refleksji teologicznej, ważniejsze inicjatywy społeczne, polityczne i edukacyjne oraz związane z nimi trudności o charakterze światopoglądowym i etycznym. Tekst kończy się zestawieniem wniosków i zarysowaniem perspektyw dalszej ekumenicznej działalności w omawianym kierunku.

The article aims to outline an important part of ecumenical activities on behalf of women, which is a Christian analysis of the phenomenon of violence against women (or gender-based violence) and its countermeasures. The problem is presented using the example of the activities of the largest ecumenical organization – the World Council of Churches (WCC), founded in 1948, which unites most of the Christian Churches and Communities. Although the Catholic Church is not a member of the WCC, it cooperates in the WCC’s activities. For this reason, it seems desirable to analyse this area of the WCC’s activities from the Catholic perspective. The article comes from the main elements of the analysis of violence against women as presented in the WCC’s statements, and in the writings of theologians involved in the works of the Council. Then it presents the major initiatives of the WCC to counter violence against women. It mentions some elements of theological reflection, important social, political and educational initiatives, as well as some worldviews and ethical difficulties related to them. The paper ends with conclusions and perspectives for further ecumenical activity in this field.
