The corporeal difference is the most fundamental in experiencing the otherness of the other. Confrontations with freak bodies in public spaces often leave us helpless, yet they call for strategies that would resolve the problem of their otherness. Modernity has formulated two basic rules governing the presence of heterotopic body: its medicalization and normativization. It would then seem that there is now a void where once was a freak show. Yet, the traces of freak shows’ spectacular logic can be traced in the television talk show formula. The comparison of these two is not aimed only at pointing at some superficial similarities, but also to more in-depth analogies concerning the logic of representation of corporeal otherness and lastly – to the metanarrative behind the show that justifies its obscenity. The paper concludes with a question of the possibility of adapting, yet, another strategy of making freak bodies publicly visible: freak show-based performances of disabled artists.

The article aims at revealing the potential of critical disability studies’ concepts (prosthetic power, visual activism) as tools in the analysis of disabled children’s experiences within the new childhood studies paradigm. In disability studies, the childhoods of disabled children are still marginalized, and similarly-in childhood studies, there is still not enough space for analyzing disability as social marker (compared to gender, race, and class). I start with three examples of 3D children’s prosthetics projects that serve as starting points for redefining what an artificial limb can become-a platform of play shared with others, a superhero’s attribute, and a tool for agency in co-designing (oneself)-to find how they resonate with theoretical and interpretative endeavors of critical disability studies. I then attempt to set them against the premises of new childhood studies and see-taking as an example disabled children’s childhood studies-what can possibly emerge at the crossroads.

Artykuł stanowi propozycję przyjrzenia się interpretacyjnemu potencjałowi pojęć ze słownika krytycznych studiów nad niepełnosprawnością (prosthetic power, visual activism) jako narzędzi analizy doświadczeń niepełnosprawnych dzieci prowadzonej w ramach nowych studiów nad dzieciństwem. W polu studiów nad niepełnosprawnością analizy dzieci i ich (niepełnosprawnego) dzieciństwa wciąż pozostają w mniejszości, podobnie jak w polu nowych studiów nad dzieciństwem niepełnosprawność wciąż nie zyskała takiej widoczności, jak płeć, klasa czy rasa. Wychodząc od opisu przykładów projektów dziecięcych protez 3D redefiniujących sztuczną kończynę odpowiednio jako pretekst do zabawy z innymi dziećmi, atrybut superbohatera i pole sprawstwa rozumianego jako współprojektowanie (siebie), poszukuję w nich nawiązań do wątków teoretycznych i interpretacyjnych obecnych w polu współczesnych, krytycznych studiów nad niepełnosprawnością, a następnie odnoszę je do perspektywy nowych studiów nad dzieciństwem, pokazując – na przykładzie disabled children’s childhood studies – jaka rama analizy niepełnosprawnych dzieci może powstać na bazie imperatywów krytycznych studiów nad niepełnosprawnością i nowych studiów nad dzieciństwem.

The article offers a look at the issue of sensitivity in the context of media and media spectacles representing the suffering of others. It refers to Hannah Arendt’s concept of politics of pity, further developed in the context of media and their representations of reality by Luc Boltanski, pointing to dilemmas experienced by a spectator watching the suffering of others. The text discusses three regimes of representing the suffering of others, as described by Boltanski and Lilie Chouliaraki, i.e. denunciation, sentimentalism and sublimation. Adopting a different approach to the spectator’s situation and using different means of expression, they outline possible directions and at the same time signal specific dilemmas related to the spectator’s moral involvement in media spectacles of the suffering of others.

The article aims to present the general principles of conducting participatory action research. It outlines the twofold history of PAR, resulting in two distinct philosophies and research practices. I discuss the specificity of PAR research process and the nature of relations between researcher and research participants. I also address the paradigmatic non-obviousness of PAR that leads to a series of significant methodological and ethical dilemmas. Most importantly, they stem from the plethora of names used to describe the method and – consequently – to define its purpose and form, especially when it comes to the role of participation. The importance of participation in PAR and its influence on the research practice are discussed in the final part of the article, offering – alongside description of the title method – a pretext for a further discussion on conditions and consequences of its implementation.

Artykuł ma na celu przybliżenie ogólnych zasad prowadzenia partycypacyjnych badań w działaniu, przywołując ich dwutorową historię oraz wynikającą z niej filozofię i praktykę badawczą. Opisuję w nim specyfikę procesu badawczego oraz relacji między badaczem i uczestnikami badań. Jednocześnie moja prezentacja opiera się na założeniu o paradygmatycznej nieoczywistości PAR, która wikła je w szereg istotnych dylematów etycznych i metodologicznych. Związane są one przede wszystkim z przyjmowaniem przez badaczy różnych definicji, a co za tym idzie – celu i formy – partycypacji uczestników badań w działaniu. Znaczenie partycypacji w PAR i jej konsekwencje dla praktyki badawczej są przedmiotem dyskusji końcowej części artykułu, oferując czytelnikowi obok opisu metody, również pretekst do namysłu nad warunkami i konsekwencjami jej stosowania.
