Problemy te zostały omówione w odniesieniu do projektu badawczego zrealizowanego w metodologii oral history pt. „Relacje świadków Grudnia 1970 w Szczecinie”.

The author asks in the article whether common narrations and common memory of the city are possible. A laboratory example of reconstructed memory is the qualitative interview during which a city’s history is presented. The purpose of the article is to examine if common-sense geography can “glue together” the dispersed memory of the city. Recalling a city’s past, pointing out the important places and landmarks may act as confirmation of common meanings and other interactive methods, such as the et cetera principle, described by ethnomethodologists [Garfinkel 1967, Sacks 1972, Cicourel 1984]. These problems are discussed with evidence from research project “Witnesses of December 1970 in Szczecin”, carried out according to the methodology of oral history.
The theoretical assumption of researching the image of the port city is that port city is designated by „facts” ( such as the geography of marine professions in a city, economic status of port workers etc.), and “ideas” such as stereotypes about port district, the images of port city etc. An idealization is important feature of these images. Project Visual Discourse of the HafenCity in Hamburg is part of a research task entitled “The Iconography of the Port Cities” and is implemented by the Commission of the Marine Sociology of The Polish Academy of Science (Gdansk branch). Its purpose is to analyze the stereotypes of the port city visual representations, that create collective images of the city and its tourist attractions.

The aim of the article is to examine if the form of ownership is a base of social identifications as important as a space of living. Author presents results of own research, conducted in Szczecin in Social Housing Associations area. The results show that forms of ownership become important part of social identity, even more than location in urban space.

In the article, a reconstruction of the crisis of democracy discourse and the reactions to this narration is laid out. Based on this reconstruction, the idea of urban protest is discussed. The dual face of the urban citizenry and ambivalent reactions of cities to the phenomenon of decapillarisation of power are discerned. Several case studies of urban populism (from the cities in Poland, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, Germany) and reaction to it are presented and analyzed in order to demonstrate the complexity and diversity of the problem. The author stipulates that the response of cities to populism and the crisis of democracy may strengthen or weaken authoritarian tendencies both at the level of institutional activities (related to the creation and implementation of local policies) and at the non-institutional level (related to the sphere of activism).
Social innovation relating for cities mean original and bottom-up solutions, focusing on better meeting the individual and the urban community needs. According to examples presented in the article, innovative activities of urban residents can be considered not only in the context of “creativity” as economic advantage, but rather in terms of responsiveness to the faulty policy of urban management. It is necessary according to the author to redefine the concept of social innovation, so as to take account of the actions that are illegal and constitute a form of protest against the inability of municipal authorities

Cities form an ideal space for the protest, not only for obvious demographic reasons, but also because of the factors such as civic traditions and rituals of protest, and the urban organization of space. The author discusses the importance of cities, the tension between tradition and innovation of urban protest, recalling selected examples from the history of urban protest. According to the author, a number of factors, ranging from the technical issues, such as openness, accessibility, and visibility, to the symbolism of the spaces selected as a place for protest, determine the political significance of the urban spaces.

In the next part of the article the importance of research and analytical support for the social process of strategy development was presented. The authors point to the need to involve in the process of the Regional Centres for Social Welfare (ROPS), whose task should be a redistribution of knowledge achieved through the activities of the Observatory of Social Integration (OIS).

The goal of the article is to characterise the most typical social issues of the communes experiencing suburbanisation. Based on the results of the research titled Diagnoza problemów społecznych w Gminie Dobra (A diagnosis of the social issues in Dobra commune), conducted in 2015, the authors identified the most significant phenomena which can be considered social issues in the commune. As the “old social issues”, the authors identify the dysfunctions which have existed before the influx from migration, contributed to and experienced by the “inveterate” denizens of the commune. The “new” issues appear in places experiencing a rapid population increase and spatial transformations resulting from the specific situation of the suburbanisation.
