The article presents the person of Marcin son of Paweł of Gołocice, descendant of the minor gentry of Łęczyca. The author describes his career as notary (notary imperiali auctoritate, notary of the Gniezno consistory and chapter, surrogate of the Gniezno official and official of Pomerania) and beneficiary (parson of Borkowo, Sompolno and Staw, vicar of the Gniezno cathedral, Pomeranian archdeacon in the Włocławek chapter).  On the one hand, emphasis is placed on Marcin’s personal talents which enabled him to perform various offices and functions in the service of the Gniezno college of vicars, cathedral and chapter (watchmaker, succentor of the cathedral choir, prefect of the construction of the cathedral). On the other hand, attention is drawn to the patronage of Władysław Oporowski, a Gniezno canon and bishop of Włocławek (1434-1449), thanks to whom Marcin of Gołocice, as one of three out of 106 vicars of the Gniezno cathedral, in the first half of the 15th century obtained prelature of the cathedral chapter and was nominated Pomeranian archdeacon in the Włocławek chapter.  Marcin of Gołocice is also the only known vicar-scriptor, the author of the inscription of the canon of the Holy Mass with a detailed Polish gloss in a manuscript which is now property of the National Library of Poland.

The article presents the book bequest of the archdeacon of Gniezno Mikołaj Kicki (died in 1429) for the chapter library in Gniezno, registered in the chapter book under the date 30 April 1435. Emphasis is placed on the uniqueness of this bequest in the 1st half of the 15th century -  due to the number of the given legal codes, careful selection of titles and the artistic value of each volume. A brief biography of the owner of the collection is presented: he was the doctor of canon law (Padua 1419), vicar-general of the bishop of Poznań Andrzej Łaskarzyc (1422-1426), the administrator of the diocese of Poznań (1426-1428) and one of the most eminent prelates of the Gniezno chapter. It examines also his relationship with the above mentioned bishop, and his impact on his friend: dean of the Gniezno chapter Jasiek of Czechel, who formed his collection of books on the model of Mikołaj. The contents of the bequest are discussed, emphasizing the importance of each title in the history of canon law. Mikołaj Kicki bequeathed 27 volumes of Bologna and Paris canon law professors: 16 volumes to the chapter library, 11 (and 4 works of liberal arts) - to his nephew Jakub Kicki. The article also presents Mikołaj's recommendations on the books, formulated in the first person and showing his concern for the collection and his awareness of its scientific and artistic value. At the end it lists eight codes still preserved in the cathedral library in Gniezno.

The article – on the basis of documents from The Diplomatic Code of Great Poland and the widely used books of the official’s court in Gniezno – presents the church career and activity of Mikołaj Grosman, the representative of the lower cathedral clergy and the parish clergy as  well.Since 1403 he had a benefice (an altar) in the Gniezno cathedral, in 1404 he was mentioned as the chaplain of the Gniezno official Mikoła Strzeszkowic. Even before 1409, he became the parish priest of St. Catherine’s church in Waliszewo, belonging to the Gniezno chapter. He held this function until his death in 1442. In the years 1417–1440 he has repeatedly served as the substitute (locumtenens) of the Gniezno officials. For several years he directed the construction of the parish church of St. Trinity in Gniezno (the right of patronage of the church belonged to the chapter), in 1434 he founded the altar of St. Barbara there. He also founded the carved Group of the Crucifixion for the church in Waliszewo. The article also attempts to sum up the annual incomes of Mikołaj Grosman: examines his revenues from the parish benefice (tithes, missalia) and incomes from the activity in the consistory court. It points out his thrift, which allowed him to expensive  foundations.

The statutes of the vicars of the Gniezno cathedral were composed at the turn of the 15th and 16th century and were in their entirety drawn up by the chapter on 22 June 1499. It was the initiative of Archbishop Fryderyk Jagiellończyk, who was concerned about an unsatisfactory functioning of the College. The initiative was carried out by Klemens from Piotrków, doctor decretalium, a Gniezno canon. On 9 December 1500 the statutem were authorized by Cardinal Fryderyk Jagiellończyk with the chapter and he commanded to have them entered in the matrica capitulari. The statutes survivedto our time in a copy made in the 1720s. Description of offenses and the system of punishments in the statues reveal the daily matters and some of the deficiencies of the College: absence from liturgical ministry, drunkenness, quarrels, irregularities of the officium Divinum, careless celebration of choral prayer, conversations and jokes during chants, drowsiness.

The article presents three types of connections between the Poor Clares nuns in Gniezno with the clergy of the Gniezno cathedral: cooperation of the abbess and the whole congregation of nuns with the procurators of the convent usually chosen by the nuns from among the lower and higher (chapter) clergy of the cathedral; family connections between the nuns and the canons of the metropolitan chapter (the sisters of canons Jarosław Kąkolewski and Piotr Pniewski, respectively Elżbieta and Jadwiga were Poor Clares nuns in the Gniezno convent) and disputes over assets between the convent and the parsons of St. Peter's church in the outskirts of Gniezno as well as the preposite of the collegiate of St. George in Gniezno. The author stresses the Poor Clares' family connections with wealthy landed gentry of Greater Poland. In conclusion of the article she draws attention to the fact that the Poor Clares nuns of Gniezno owned individual property, which was a violation of the rule of the Order of Saint Clare.

The article presents the person of Michał son of Andrzej of Domasław, parson at Słupca (1439-1447), a town of the bishops of Poznań, former notary of the Gniezno consistory. Emphasis is placed on his involvement for the parish, especially his activity connected with his experience as notary (cases held at the Gniezno consistory in defense of the parish benefice and legates for the Słupca parish, concern for documentation of the legates). The study contains also a list of parsons in Słupca in the first half of the 15th century. The whole is complemented by excerpts from consistory acts showing the personal decisions of Michał of Domasław (resignation from the practice of the profession of notary, testament) as well as his activity as parson in Słupca.

The examination of the book collection donated by John Clare to the chapter library brings surprising results. The bishop gave to the chapter 17 volumes: 7 books concerning canon law and 7 works concerning theology. Among the canonistic works we can find the most important medieval collections of church law: The Decretum Gratiani and The decretals of Gregory IX, the commentary on the Decretals of Gregory IX by Heinrich von Merseburg, and the outline of church law concerning the election for church positions by William de Mandagoto. Among the theological works we can distinguish two most important medieval syntheses: Sentences by Peter Lombard and Secunda secundae – the most widely-read part of the Summa by Thomas Aquinas and his two volumes of the Catena, translated into German a few decades later on the initiative of the order. The mysterious “illuminated code” may be regarded as the first version of Speculum humanae salvationis, the anonymous work showing the history of salvation in miniatures, which was copied on the walls of the organ gallery in the cathedral in Königsberg. The codes donated to the chapter are the evidence that the benefactor was a man of great intellect, who cared for the legal and theological education of the cathedral clergy. They also reflect the processes of forming new church administration in the bishopric of Sambia, whose protagonist in the years 1294-1344 was John Clare from Toruń – a member of the cathedral chapter and bishop. The book collection might have inspired the development of art and writing in German in the Teutonic Order.

The subject of the article is the discovered prayer book of the bishop of Chełmno Wikbold Dobilstein (1363–1385). As the history of the manuscript is closely connected with the fate of its owner, the fi rst part of the article addresses the biography of the bishop, particularly the years spent „in exile”: Wikbold left the diocese in 1376 aft er a conflict with local knights and the Teutonic Order. He first settled down in the court of Karthaus (Kartuzy) in Koblenz, and later in the Cistercian Abbey in Altenberg. This was probably the time when the prayer book containing works belonging to the Rhine mystical school were created. It has an impressive cover made by an unknown bookbinder from Cologne from the circle of the Master of the Book of Vows in the second half of the 1370s- the 1380s. The bishop probably bequeathed the prayer book to his library in the castle in Lubawa – it later became the property of the Bernandine convent there. After the convent was cassated in 1821, the prayer book was passed over to the library of a secondary school in Chojnice, and in 1946 it was transported to the University Library in Toruń. It was not until recent years that the abbreviated name of its author was identified as Wikbold Dobilsten.
