Interpretation of G. Vico’s philosophy is always already related to the complicated question of its reception. B. Suchodolski’s, a Polish philosopher of culture, remarks about Lascienza nuova may be the starting point for the analysis of left-wing thinkers’ fascination with Vico’s work. However, L. Strauss i E. Voegelin argue to the contrary, showing that Vico remains the inspirational fi gure in the ongoing discussion about rationality, modernity and politics.

Georg Simmel in his diagnosis of a modern lifestyle focused also upon the development of tourism. Because of his emphatic understanding of culture he considered Italy a more important destination than the Alps. Simmel’s philosophy of culture, his ideas of aesthetic and art allow us to see the guides as cultural products of their time.

Georg Simmel’s interest in Michelangelo’s art is present in all stages of his academic carrier. He published only two works exclusively on this artist but his name frequently appears through Simmel’s lifework. In 1899 he published a short article on Buonarroti’s poetry and in 1910 a longer piece appeared where Simmel interpreted his artistic achievement as a philosopher of culture. A year later Simmel published The Concept and Tragedy of Culture where his earlier remarks on Michelangelo are included in the context of art’s autonomy and the relation between art, ethics and modernity. Max Weber and Ernst Cassirer argued against Simmel’s allegedly emphatic and aesthetic conception of culture.

This article presents the ideas coined by Wolfgang Maderthaner and Lutz Musner who diagnosed a‘‘crisis in cultural studies”. According to those authors, representing historical cultural studies, it is proved by meaningful absence of social aspects of culture. It was caused by the dominance of culturalism giving preference to the world of meaning, text, and picture. Therefore Maderthaner and Musner are sceptical about cultural turn and other turns. The Austrian academic duo, inspired by Pierre’a Bourdieu, demand social, economic and political aspects to undergo more detailed scrutiny while analyzing the realm of culture. Otherwise the cultural scientists risk becoming the prisoners of an “Ivory Tower” or being subordinated to the dominant economic power. It would be equal with “selfanihilation of reason”, however, they are meant to use it in the best and most useful way.

The article presents the rise of Polish cultural studies into a scientific discipline and academic trend, placing it in a broader perspective of culture as such and of early-modernist intellectual approaches to it. Revealing the philosophical, social and political context behind cultural studies, the paper uses it as a background to discuss different approaches to reflection on culture which cultural studies had to confront on its path to its cultural identity. This is where culture in its general theoretical dimension meets the specific Polish historical conditions.

The authors focus on the cultural role and place of the guide books. They suggest understanding them as cultural phenomena the structure and evolution of which is closely connected with the changing model of traveling. The authors are inspired in this point by the axiological concept of culture as a guide book, contrary to the concept of culture as a “toolbox” which, in their opinion, reduces the understanding of culture to its technological and purely utilitarian aspects.
