This study is to serve predominantly conservation operations to be conducted in the church o f the Holy Virgin Mary in Katowice. Its outcome may be employed also in other historical buildings in Katowice, made o f similar material, and demonstrating a similar state o f preservation, since the object in question is a characteristic example o f Upper Silesian architecture from the turn o f the nineteenth century. The specificity o f this region calls for a suitable programme which places particular emphasis on the permanence o f conservation, since the admissible norms of the pollution o f the atmospheric environment are exceeded several score times. An additional impact is exerted by mechanical damage caused by movements o f the ground on which the historical buildings stand. Frequently, objects are situated on mine runs (as in the case o f the church o f the Holy Virgin Mary). Proposals for the conservation o f the masonry and brick walls o f historical buildings in Katowice are based on the results o f research and experiments obtained during the conservation o f historical objects in Upper Silesia. The mentioned material and methods are, at the same time, a review o f present-day possibilities for preventing the further destruction o f historical substance in extremely detrimental conditions.
