This article presents a thorough analysis of the concept of virtual organisation, allowing an examination of the virtualisation process to be carried out in a comprehensive manner while also taking into account its complexity and multidimensionality. The methodology for measuring the level of organisational virtualness has been effectively applied to a wide range of businesses, both large and small, representing the traditional and high-technology sectors. Statistical analysis confirmed that virtualisation has a positive impact on a company’s competitiveness. The results and conclusions of the examination provide a new perspective for the scientific exploration of virtual organisation, and form a starting point for future studies in this area of research.

As pointed by numerous scholars high technology sectors are very apt for studying entrepreneurial activities due to their high levels of innovativeness. However, taking into account the highly dynamic and substantially hostile environment in those sectors, innovation may often not be the best strategic choice for market entry. In fact, the business practice confirms the extensive utilization of imitation strategy by technology entrepreneurs Meanwhile, the literature on entrepreneurship focuses almost exclusively on original innovators, underestimating the importance of imitation in the growth process and indicating shortage of research on imitative activities of entrepreneurs. Therefore this article presents discussion on the applicability of entrepreneurial orientation to imitators from the high-tech industries.

According to the open innovation model an effective strategy for increasing innovation and competitiveness of the region should be based on active and multilevel cooperation among operators of the local tourism business environment. It is commonly assumed that an exceptionally important role in creating a favorable environment for the cooperative practices in the region is performed by local authorities. Yet, a modest number of research findings presented in the literature indicate a rather high level of inertia of local authorities in creating appropriate conditions for tourism business development, thus putting in question the effectiveness of performed intermediary function in the process of knowledge transfer among tourist enterprises. Given the paucity of empirical evidence on effectiveness of innovation policy interventions at the regional level, this article presents the empirical findings regarding cooperation in innovation between tourist enterprises and local institutional agents.

The purpose of the article is to present both a theoretical and empirical analysis of the problem of protecting the value generated from innovation in tourism industry from the perspective of innovation barriers of tourism enterprises. Empirical evidence is obtained through surveys conducted in 2012 in the southern region of Poland. The questionnaires were administered to a sample of 55 micro, small and medium-sized tourist enterprises. The obtained results confirm that more than half of investigated firms often experience difficulties in ensuring effective protection of implemented innovations. Perceived difficulties result from a limited pool of accessible protection tools as well as improper use of available mechanisms. The adverse impact of the barrier is more intensive with respect to the inclination to cooperate in innovation than directly on the number of implemented innovations.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to present selected models for development of an innovation network in clusters from the perspective of network relations. Design/methodology/approach: The argumentation draws upon the literature on the concept of the network and on the results of research of other authors related to the activity of companies in clusters. Findings: Hierarchical relations between the dominant company and suppliers using its technology offer limited possibilities of innovation creation. Such an influence on the position of the company is exerted by “producer networks” where the leading company defines the conditions of production and supply and provides technology. Discovering new knowledge and creating innovation usually requires heterarchical relations where the power and decision-making process are decentralised and managerial competences and skills are balanced and dispersed among network participants. This case is represented by “buyer networks” where the leading company formulates expectations for product characteristics and the subcontractor responds to these requirements using its own development and design solutions. Research limitations/implications: The research is based on the theoretical literature on the concept of the network and on the results of empirical research of other authors related to the activity of companies in clusters. Originality/value: The article broadens the area of research in the field of cluster and network relations as well as indicates the possibility of using this knowledge in entrepreneurs’ decisions.

The aim of the article is to explore the managerial practices that enable capitalizing on the critical instability during an on-going transition period in the life-cycle of an industry. The investigation followed a qualitative approach using a field-based case study method and a longitudinal design. Multiple data collection methods were adopted to reduce a systematic bias in the gathered data and to develop the case, shaped by the context and emergent data. The gathered rich data enabled the confrontation of industry transformation signals with the strategic maneuvering exhibited by the investigated firm. Observed options involved imitating, repositioning, exiting or entering. The study is a part of a larger project financed by National Science Centre of Poland (NCN) – 2013/11/D/HS4/03965.
