According to the Terror Management Theory, it was predicted that mortality salience leads to engagement in altruistic behavior. Results of experiment 1 supported this prediction. Participants in mortality salience condition had the will to engage in altruistic behavior more often than participants in control condition. The different studies suggested that this effect could be mediated by the change the level of self representation. However experiment 2 proved that mortality salience does not lead to shift to collective self. The discussion focuses on relevance of the standard of altruism. The Anna Freud's (1993) suggestion of link between fear of death and altruism is also discussed.
