Issues discussed in this article are related to the process of self-education. The author presents the concepts of andragogy and lifelong learning in the functioning of the education sciences. He also refers to a research project carried out in “Andragoski Center Republike Slovenije” (“Andragogy Centre of the Republic of Slovenia in Ljubljana”). Conclusions from the study show the differences and distinctiveness between pedagogy and andragogy which provoke refl ection on the place of adult education in the society and the world. By referring to Nairobi Recommendation on the Development of Adult Education by UNESCO, the author combines educational dilemmas with law and human need for education in adult life. He presents his fi ndings in terms of the functioning of higher education and focuses on the tasks of an academic teacher and student attitudes towards their own education.

W artykule przypomniano sylwetkę Profesor Haliny Szwarc (1923–2002) – twórczyni uniwersytetu trzeciego wieku w Polsce. W tekście przedstawiono liczne szczegóły z jej biografii. Zademonstrowano jej heroiczną działalność konspiracyjną, której podjęła się już w 1939 roku, w wieku zaledwie 16 lat. Przedstawiono życie Profesor Szwarc w okresie powojennym, koncentrując się przede wszystkim na zobrazowaniu rozwoju jej kariery naukowej i zawodowej, ale nie pomijając wątków osobistych. Dużo uwagi poświęcono ukazaniu wysiłków Profesor Szwarc włożonych przez nią w powołanie do życia Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku w Warszawie, któremu nadała bogate cele i zadania oraz formy działalności. Artykuł kończy się apelem do współczesnych przedstawicieli świata nauki o trwałą pamięć i uznanie dla Profesor Szwarc oraz stawianie jej za wzór.

The article reminds a profile of Professor Halina Szwarc (1923–2002), who is one of the most outstanding Polish andragogists, being a creator of the concept of a university of the third age in Poland, whose realisation was the third educational facility of this type in the world. The text makes references to her origins and childhood. Her heroic conspiracy activity which she started in 1939, being only 16, is presented. Her life in the post-war period is presented, focusing above all on her scientific and professional career, but not omitting personal threads. Much attention is given to her efforts made in founding the University of the Third Age in Warsaw, to which she gave broad goals and tasks, as well as forms of activity. The article is ended with an appeal to the contemporary figures of the world of science for a permanent remembrance and recognition for Professor Szwarc and following her example.

In the process of adult education development next levels of educational activity and organization appeared. It begun with adult teaching, literacy, knowledge popularization, attempt to earn a degree. But since conference in Tokio (1972) theoretical and social issues of the process have been underlined to shape practice and theory of adult education. In the paper definitions of adult education are analyzed given by R. Wroczyński, W. Okoń, F. Urbańczyk, H. Radlińska as well as foreign authors, recommendations of adult education conferences in Tokio, Exeter, Paris extended in Hamburg and Belem. To understand modern changes in adult education conference in Lublana is essential, where outstanding specialists analyzed term “adult education” and gave new meaning to it. They also underlined that adult education is also a social movement, gathering people interested in development of this kind of activity, graduates and promoters of different forms of adult education. Author presents two examples of this. The first one is adult education practice in Sweden, where 13 education societies acts to develop adult education. The second one is the Great Britain where WEA (Working Education Association) is specially successful. Is was founded in 1903 to educate workers and now it helps to educate different social groups. This year WEA celebrates 110th anniversary and develops British adult education providing 30% of all adult education activities. It also organizes conferences, publishes books and periodicals, develops international cooperation. Also WEA’s branches developed in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries like Sweden where ABF acts since 1912 or Norway. Social aspect of adult education is important for institutional development, organization of regional and international cooperation and recommendations for successful adult education promotion and advancement in global perspective. Former recommendations were sustained and enriched at CONFINTEA VI in Belem in 2009.

Artykuł ukazuje stosunkowo mało znany obszar twórczości i pracy Adama Mickiewicza – działalność nauczycielską. Praca nauczycielska była najdłu-żej prowadzoną działalnością naszego wielkiego poety, której oddawał się z nie-zwykłym zaangażowaniem, sumiennością, nie tylko ze względów zarobkowych, ale też i z pasji do zawodu nauczycielskiego. W artykule pokazano Mickiewicza jako nauczyciela, poczynając od posady w szkole powiatowej w Kownie, gdzie prowadził lekcje z różnych przedmiotów, poprzez etat profesora literatury łaciń-skiej w Akademii Lozańskiej, aż po stanowisko profesora nadzwyczajnego zakresu literatury słowiańskiej w Collège de France w Paryżu, wszechnicy dla dorosłych. Autor ukazuje wkład Mickiewicza w upowszechnienie w Europie dorobku polskiej i słowiańskiej literatury.

The article shows the rather little known aspect of Adam Mickiewicz's work – his educational activity. His work as a teacher was the activity our great poet performed the longest, which he devoted himself to with extraordinary commitment and conscientiousness, not only due to pecuniary reasons, but also his passion for the job. The article presents Mickiewicz as a teacher, starting with a a teaching position in the district school in Kowno, where he conducted lessons in various subjects, onto his professorship in Latin literature at the Academy in Lausanne and finishing with his post of associate professor of Slavic literature at the Collège de France in Paris, a university for adults. The author demonstrates the input Mickiewicz had in spreading Polish and Slavic literature in Europe.
