1935 brought unrest to usually peaceful municipalities in the northern Suwałki county when local peasants gathered to protest, demanding lower szarwark – a tax paid in kind, usually through service in construction and maintenance of county roads. The protesters clashed with the police, which led to the arrests of several participants. The protests ceased once the county and municipality officials agreed to protesters’ demands and pardoned the arrested.

W 1935 r. spokojne zazwyczaj gminy północnej części powiatu suwalskiego stały się areną protestów miejscowych rolników żądających obniżenia wysokości szarwarku – podatku świadczonego w naturze, z reguły w postaci pracy przy budowie lub naprawie gminnych dróg. W trakcie wystąpień doszło do starć z funkcjonariuszami policji. Aresztowano kilkudziesięciu uczestników zajść. Protesty zakończyły się ustąpieniem władz powiatowych i gminnych oraz amnestią dla oskarżonych.
