In his essay Rejoicing: Or the Torments of Religious Speech Bruno Latour weighs the possibility of a restoration of religious speech in a world in which the indisputable framework for common action is the non-existence of God. He constructs his agnostic apologetics of religion in opposition to contemporary strategies of defense of religion — rationalization, derationalization, aestheticization and symbolic readings. According to Latour, religious speech in its essence is similar to amorous speech, whose purpose is to transform the interlocutors rather than communicate a statement. Religious threads, which appear also in the more recent book An Inquiry into Modes of Existence, constitute an important addition to Latour’s project.

The article analyzes the portrayals of the trip to the Moon in the following motion pictures: Le Voyage dans la Lune (dir. Georges Méliès, 1902), Apollo 13 (dir. Ron Howard, 1995), Opération Lune (dir. William Karell, 2002) and First Man (dir. Damien Chazelle, 2018). The author addresses the changes in the symbolic dimension of the cinematic portrayals of Moon conquest as well as the visual representation of those changes. The principal focus of the article is on the special place of the Moon conquest within American mythology and recent attempts at both restitution and demythologization of this particular myth.

Eclectic writings of a Neapolitan philosopher, Giambattista Vico, have been a subject of an ongoing quarrel between the adherents of Enlightenment and those opposed to modernity. Traditional reading interprets Vico as a profoundly modern mind, forced to implementreligious elements in his works as means of avoiding Inquisitional persecution. However, in recent years more and more scholars seem to perceive the religious dimension as integral or even pivotal for the understanding of New Science. As Mark Lilla suggests in his papers, theological and metaphysical education have left an indelible mark on Vico, who in his grand masterpiece tried to defend faith and faithful against modern skepticism. The author then goes on to present and compare the reception of Vico’s writings in the thought of John Milbank and Joseph Ratzinger. Both theologians agree that Vico’s statement verum esse ipsum factum has substantial consequences for the perception of the relations between God and the made — they differ, however, in the assessment of the said statement. For Milbank this claim is orthodox, while Ratzinger sees it as a beginning of specifically secular approach to reality.

All nineteen episodes of Black Mirror produced so far deal with the theme of social consequences of technological development. Dystopian vision of the future not only relates to the stories told in each episode, but also the way the series is distributed. Popularity of the series made the creators decide to move the production from traditional television to the Netflix platform. Ironically, the streaming giant is, within the framework of entertainment industry, a fulfilment of some disturbing features of new technologies, shown in the diegetic layer of Black Mirror.
