The present article examines the contribution to the spread of readership, especially among women made between 1948 and 1989 by the 'Przyjaciolka' (Woman Friend) weekly - the most widely circulated Polish periodical that reached several million readers. The author analyses the origins of the periodical, which stemmed from the popular pre-war 'Moja Przyjaciolka' (My Woman Friend), its place on the press market and its formula. What was unique about the 'Przyjaciolka' phenomenon was that it was based on readers' letters; it was the readers who shaped the periodical's thematic scope. The author also analyses the process of popularising literature and shaping reading needs and habits among workers and people living in the countryside with little (or no) reading competences. Its essence was to treat literary or para-literary texts (the 'Joys and sorrows' column) instrumentally, using them to affirm the achievements of the new political system. The ideological stance was strengthened by frequent references made by the 'Przyjaciolka' authors to the tradition of the 19th-century didactic and educational trends in the popularisation of c ulture.

Bibliotherapy develops following various patterns, depending on the academic background of its theoreticians, authors of its first analyses in a given country. There are clear differences both with respect to the methodology and means, and the professional training of people providing literature-based therapy or counselling. An example of different approaches to bibliotherapy and poetry therapy can be seen in the views of Polish scholars, mainly bibliologists and 'educationists', and the their German colleagues, who represent mainly medical sciences. For many years the forms of therapy applied in Poland drew on the views of Ewa Tomasik in 'Czytelnictwo i biblioterapia w pedagogice specjalnej' (Reading and bibliotherapy in special needs pedagogics), Warsaw 1994), while in Germany the practises drew on Hilarion G. Petzold's and Ilse Orth's study 'Poesie und Therapie. Über die Heilkraft der Sprache' (Bielefeld-Locarno 2005). The present study examines the basic 21st century German-language literature on bibliotherapy and poetry therapy, in which - as it turns out - H.G. Petzold's opinions and guidelines have survived to a greater or lesser extent.

Facts and processes related to the world of books, libraries, librarianship, information and written communication gradually became the object of scientific interest in a number of separate study fields. The multitude and variability of these fields, their continuous evolution and varying, depending on a country, nature and scope are a serious impediment to the creation of consistent and uniform report on the object of the study. Constant processes of integration, separation and specialization in the field of study on books, libraries and information alter the status quo and lead to the development of new constructions in theory, methodology and research practice. The description of the current situation is further hindered by the chaos in the nomenclature of study fields, specializations and branches, even more increased by semantic nuances of the multilingual literature and negligent use of concepts and definitions. The current research situation in the field of book studies and library and information science is defined by the following phenomena: (1) The multitude and diversity of study issues makes their inclusion in one broad field (book studies, library science or information science) virtually impossible. The study fields mentioned above have become separate disciplines, although some relation and cooperation remains possible; (2) Each discipline formed in the field within last few decades is perceived independent in the science because of its specific object of study, specific set of concepts and study methods, nature of its relations with other study fields and cognitive and practical objectives; (3) Issues of book studies, library and information science interest other study fields, in particular the humanities and sociology, become an important constituent of their research processes and considerably influence the theory and practice of studies on books, libraries and information. Special attention should be paid here to (heterogeneous and „multiform”) studies of culture, (social) communication and media; (4) Studies of books, libraries and information are clearly divided into those dealing with historical issues and those focused on the present. One of most prominent branches is historical book studies, researching books as the product and tool of human civilization, product of material and spiritual culture and tool for communication over the ages; (5) The increase in the amount of factual knowledge in the field of book studies and library and information science has not been so far accompanied by appropriately developed theoretical and methodological reflections which would enable the intensification of the research and increase in the quality of the studies in question.

Stanislaw Sierotwinski (1909-1975), a librarian, historian of literature and bibliologist, played a key role in protecting and recovering various library collections following the end of the Nazi occupation of Poland. Between 1 December 1945 and 30 April 1947 he worked as the Ministry of Education delegate for the protection of abandoned and deserted libraries. His office was in Cracow and he supervised an area divided into six districts: Gdansk, Olsztyn, Szczecin, Wroclaw, Cracow and Lubuski districts. In his work he focused mainly on the Western and Northern Territories (the so-called Recovered Territories, regions incorporated into Poland after WWII). Between 1 December 1945 and 31 December 1946 he tracked down and recovered around 5.5m books, 1.8m of which were transported to Cracow. He was particularly active in Lower Silesia, where he saved over 2m books. He brought to Cracow around 1.7m books (over 90% of them of German origin) from that region. Saving such a huge number of books which had been stolen or nearly destroyed was a great achievement, particularly if we take into account the difficult conditions in which Stanislaw Sierotwinski worked. His small team had just a few lorries at their disposal and meagre financial resources. The problems outlined in the present article do not exhaust the subject. They just demonstrate that there is a need for in-depth research concerning the protection and recovery of library collections after the Second World War.

In the inter-war period librarians in Poland were trained mainly at various courses organised by libraries and education institutions. A university-level course was offered only by the private Wolna Wszechnica Polska (Free Polish University). Between 1920 and 1923 a course in library science was organised at the Jagiellonian University by Spiridion Wukadinovic (1870-1938), a professor of German and formerly librarian at university libraries in Graz and Prague. After completing the course, one of its graduates, Maria Kuszowa, went on to organise the Main Library Academy of the Mining in Krakow (1922-1932).

(title in Polish - 'O chronologizacyjnych mozliwosciach tkwiacych w drzeworycie z wizerunkiem sw. Jerzego w polskich 'Hortulusach' pierwszej polowy XVI wieku'). The present article is an attempt to date the Polish edition of the 'Hortulus animae' prayer book, printed by the Cracow printing house of Maciej Szarfenberg (1527-1546), two fragments of which are now held at the Jagiellonian Library. The studies of this rare publication have led so far to several very different suggestions as to its chronology, with 1527 given as 'terminus post quem' and 1540s given as 'terminus ante quem'. Significantly, previous dating attempts have been based mainly on historical evidence (1537 as the date on which Szarfenberg was granted the royal privilege to print the Polish 'Hortulus' books), typographic evidence (analyses of the typeface used in the prayer book) or on - not very convincing - conservation evidence (traces of woodworm seen in one of the fragments). However, so far scholars have failed to notice and thus use the chronologising possibilities of one woodcut illustration from the surviving fragment. Its analysis, presented in this article, is to indicate and use these possibilities to make the current dating of the Szarfenberg edition of 'Hortulus' more precise.

This article deals with manuscripts from the library at the Franciscan Convent of Our Lady of Angels in Hradcany. It follows the way the manuscripts were recorded in the existing catalogues for 1675, 1728, 1850 and 1855. The 1850 catalogue preserves a list of manuscripts which indicates that at the time there were 116 manuscripts in the library. When we inspect the catalogue itself we find that the list is not complete and does not record all the manuscripts detailed in the catalogue (with at least fifteen items missing).

Ever since the first issue of Andreas Alciatus's 'Emblematum liber' was published, it became one of the richest sources of inspiration for various artists, including printers, who began to use representations of decorating emblems in their marks. The connection between emblems and printers' marks was substantiated by Andreas Alciatus himself, who, when listing the reasons for publishing the 'Emblematum liber', quotes the urge to explain Froben's and Manutius's marks. While their devices preceded the publication of Alciatus's work, the marks of the subsequent printers transformed the relation between them and emblems into a two-way relationship. It is interesting that emblematic motifs were used by distinguished printers representing the Antwerp milieu, which in turn were the inspiration for the masters from lesser printing centres. The proof of this relationship is the mark of a printer from Cracow - Szymon Kempini - including the representation of Triton, the same as in Alciatus's emblem Honour and in the device of a printer from Antwerp - Jan van Waesberghe. The mark of the master from Cracow is also a perfect testimony to the penchant for allegoric and symbolic manner of representing and depicting Polish typography existing from the 16th century.

Stanislaw Sarnicki's work 'Statuta i metrika przywilejow koronnych...' (Statutes and records of crown privileges, Cracow 1594) contains a very interesting series of graphic portraits. These portraits are scattered all over the book and are linked to texts devoted to the duties of holders of various offices in Poland. They portray specific individuals. The present author has identified them and has attempted to answer the question why those officials and those individuals from among a great number of people holding power in the 16th century Poland were chosen to be presented in the work. All those portrayed were connected with Jan Zamoyski, grand crown hetman (commander-in-chief) and chancellor at the time, who pursued a very consistent policy aimed at restricting the king's power. Sarnicki's book contains faithful portraits of well-known people. Thus those people were identified with the power they held and were presented as those who in a way personally oversaw the enforcement of the law. The connections with Zamoyski testified to the fact that he was the man who was the guardian of the public order. Zamoyski was a protector of both the author, Stanislaw Sarnicki, and the publisher, Jan Januszowski; he could, therefore, have influenced the book's content. Zamoyski wanted his propaganda message to reach specific groups of the Polish society. He was able to achieve this goal thanks to this high-circulation publication; the fact that it was in the form of a book increased its stature and significance.
