The contradiction between the theoretically unlimited access to information and the efficiency of information searching has been pressing researchers and IT professionals to enhance the collaboration of computers and human workforce in the processes of information and knowledge acquisition. The importance attached to information retrieval methods has expanded beyond the library environment, resulting in the increasing respect of the professional background of traditional information retrieval languages and in the utilization of their theoretical principles even by business organisations. Having set the objective of the quick and comprehensive searching of portal and webpage contents, the professionals engaged in the development of the so-called semantic or intelligent web are working towards the creation of a web-based open and distributed system, that aims to apply standard descriptive languages to the online information sources, and will reach its full potential when the automatic distribution of data becomes possible. New programs and methods are being developed with the collaboration of software engineers, and the milestones of the progress are reported on by W3C working groups. The coordinated and computer-based development of various traditional and automatic cataloguing languages demonstrates remarkable achievements, however, automatic solutions are only provided by a few softwares. As far as computer-based classification tools are concerned, a group of experts in the theoretical issues of information sciences regard taxonomies and related tools as an easily adoptable classification system (a controlled vocabulary with a low level of hierarchy) that can be generated relatively quickly. Thus this paper primarily concentrates on taxonomy.

The ideal information search tool is capable of retrieving relevant search results in a short time and even in large, heterogeneous and complex information sources. It enables the user to find everything that is important, without having to deal with inaccurate, incomplete, approximate, false or inadequate results. The synchronised fulfilment of these two requirements was a vision a few years ago, but as the level of our current competencies shows, it can be achieved within the framework of library portal services. Over the past 3–4 years, market leader commercial library portal systems have been produced that make it possible both for theorists and practicing professionals to determine future trends. Librarians contribute to the development projects with the deep knowledge of user needs, while developers apply the latest technologies in the design of their new services, which at the same time motivates customers to think further. Librarians expect developers to take into account their requirements to a greater degree. At the same time, system developers need to join forces with organisations for standardisation in order to meet the requirements for unified principles as the basis for cooperation between different systems and technologies.

The RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology - making it possible to follow and identify objects, people and products - will soon be applied on a massive scale in all kinds of electronic systems. Electronic follow-up and the automation of monotonous manual processes will result in a breakthrough similar to the shift from manual labelling to bar code systems. The European Union has set out the directions for research related to RFID technology, the automated reading of identification data of objects, and to the topic of the 'Internet of Thing', representing the next generation of Internet and network applications. The already unified library standards, the introduction of miniature versions of labels, and the fact that RFID products are becoming cheaper thus more affordable for libraries means that thinking about the technology shift in library environment is quite realistic. This paper reports on a collaborative development project carried out by three partners: Gedeon Richter, a Hungarian pharmaceutical company, ODIN Budapest Ltd, a company providing RFID infrastructure, and IQSYS Computing Ltd. The innovative solutions applied in the project have resulted in valuable experiences and resources for further development.
