Niniejsze rozważania dotyczą teorii ekspresji muzycznej w ujęciu Petera Kivy. Autor zestawia teorie siedemnasto-, osiemnastowieczne z poglądami współczesnymi i udowadnia, że emotywny opis muzyki może być zrozumiały zarówno dla laika, jak i muzyka -profesjonalisty. Ta teoria sugeruje, że kryteria ekspresji muzycznej możemy identyfikować z kryteriami ekspresji ludzkich zachowań. Kivy dowodzi, że opis emocji zawartych w muzyce może być równie czytelny jak opis ludzkich zachowań. Amerykański filozof twierdzi, że jego teoria dostarcza obiektywnych podstaw do orzekania o ekspresywności muzyki i do formułowania sądów krytycznych.

The following considerations concern Peter Kivy’s theory of musical expressiveness. Kivy integrates seventeenth and eighteenth – century theories with recent ones and he shows how emotive description of music may be intelligible both for a layperson and for a musical scholar. This theory suggests that criteria of musical expressiveness can be identified with those of human expression. Kivy proves that emotive description of music can be understood as clearly as emotive depiction of human behaviour. American philosopher concludes, that his theory provides universal grounds for the emotive description and criticism of music.
