The feasts of specific groups and communities are also the part of the calendar ritual cycle of some rural or urban municipalities, where either the acceptance or termination of membership and the progress of individuals to the next stage of life occurs. This type of festivity is also the school “majáles/juniáles” in a village Liptovské Sliače, which is the subject of this study. It presents an analysis of the current state of this calendar feast in the context of the concept of the rituals of transition (A. v. Gennep). “Majáles/juniáles” is a long-standing traditionally significant feast in this municipality, whereby the school ending pupils are separated from the local school environment. The author presents this school event as a part of a wider complex of separate rituals that finish the membership of these pupils in the school community. This paper pays particular attention to presentation of the functions of this phenomenon in the current rural environment, its transformation, changes in this field, perception of it by actors themselves, with an emphasis on etic and emic perspective.

The study provides a comparative analysis of current forms of the all-year-round cultural and social festivities on the example of four selected villages. It tries to define the basic sources of inspiration for these events, the factors influencing this sphere, and it also seeks identical and different elements in this area and the possibility of using the “societal capital” (human, social and cultural) of each municipality in these activities. The basic source of inspiration for most socio-cultural events includes the local folk culture with the traditional annual cycle being the main part of it; in several cases, the annual cycle is tied to church holidays. In recent decades, events dedicated to children, or more precisely families with children, mothers and pensioners have become a kind of „cultural and social constants“ not only in the rural but also in the urban environment. The research confirmed the residents‘ lack of interest in celebrating the state and political events. Especially in suburban areas, the import of new globalized phenomena is more evident, whereby the more isolated villages have better conditions to develop their local traditional culture. The article presents several findings regarding the “societal” capital, especially the unequal use of human and cultural capital in the monitored villages, and it also emphasizes the importance of residents’ activism and support to this area by local governments, and the creation of the best possible conditions for cultural background and infrastructure.

The application of elements of traditional folk culture and „regional education“ is a hot topic already the third decade in the Slovak school system. Although the initial beginnings of this phenomenon occurred more than a hundred years ago (this period is named „hnutie svojrázu“), we can reflect intensive concrete steps and results of this process on a larger scale only after 1989. This has been done mainly in the context of the changed social-political situation, the effort to upgrade and to change the content or form of education, to change the school system. The situation allows the introduction of an alternative educational program in our school system after 1989. This paper focuses on clarifying the history and genesis of this area in our country, also outlines certain ethnological aspects and possibilities for further research on this topic. These are, first, the contribution to the history of ethnology, but also the aim of this paper is to find and show some other research perspectives, such a the impact of this specific form of education for the functioning of a such type of schools in the wider socio-cultural contexts of localities, the impact of this school to socio-cultural capital of students, the way of life of the individual sites.

The paper focuses on the ethnographic and ethnological studies dealing with the situation on the territory of Slovakia leaving aside the studies by Hungarian authors. The article also includes a list of references concerning the outlined period and the data collected in Slovakia.
