Interdisciplinarity in Pastoral Theology. An Example of Socio-Theological Research

The purpose of the article is to analyze the idea of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theology and sociology. This is one of the methodological proposals for research projects carried out under pastoral theology. Interdisciplinarity is understood as combining research methods for the cooperation of scientists from both disciplines in the process of planning, implementing and interpreting the results of empirical research. It is inspired by a problem identified in pastoral theology that requires exploration. The presentation consists of three parts. The first is devoted to the location of empirical research within pastoral theology. The second concerns the assumptions and significance of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theologians and sociologists. In the final part, the areas of interdisciplinary cooperation among the research teams are pointed out. The potential of qualitative research as a space for cooperation among representatives of both sciences and as an important source of knowledge from the viewpoint of pastoral theology is shown. The comparative and synthetic method was used. The analysis shows that interdisciplinary research in the field of pastoral theology has great potential related to the acquisition and interpretation of multi-faceted empirical data and the designation of new research fields, which will significantly enrich the theological analysis process as well as the presentation and application of pastoral models.

The aim of this article is firstly to analyse the levels of young people’s social participation, along with its selected determinants. Secondly, the aim is to answer the question: how do the research participants value voluntary initiatives and actions proposed at school? Research findings by representatives of social sciences concerning the situation of modern-day young people, their social participation, passive attitudes and on the issue of civic education constitute a reference point for the discussion. Subject to analysis are outcomes of representative sociological research conducted among adult young people attending secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Lublin in 2020 and 2021. The paper discusses the declared statements of the respondents on their participation in non-compulsory groups and initiatives organized at school, as well as in extra-curricular, pro-social organizations and actions. The statistical analyses included the following independent variables: sex, place of residence and religiosity measured by attitude towards faith, chi-square and Cramer’s V tests. The conclusions show among others that the respondents exhibit a low level of social participation. They highlight the potential to be found in their positive valuation of various forms of engagement as well as their willingness to take part in actions that aim at helping others in the future.

Celem artykułu jest analiza poziomu i wybranych uwarunkowań partycypacji społecznej młodzieży oraz odpowiedź na pytanie, jak badani wartościują dobrowolne inicjatywy i działania proponowane na terenie szkoły. Teoretycznym punktem odniesienia są ustalenia przedstawicieli nauk społecznych na temat współczesnej sytuacji ludzi młodych, ich społecznej partycypacji i bierności, a także zagadnienie edukacji obywatelskiej. Przedmiot refleksji stanowią wyniki reprezentatywnych badań socjologicznych zrealizowanych w latach 2020 i 2021 wśród pełnoletnich uczniów szkół ponadpodstawowych na terenie archidiecezji lubelskiej. Tekst zawiera omówienie ich deklaracji dotyczących udziału w fakultatywnych grupach i inicjatywach organizowanych w szkole oraz w organizacjach i działaniach prospołecznych poza nią. Przeprowadzane analizy statystyczne uwzględniają zmienne niezależne: płeć, miejsce zamieszkani i religijność, mierzoną stosunkiem do wiary. Zastosowano również testy chi-kwadrat i V Cramera. Konkluzje wskazują na znacząco niski poziom partycypacji społecznej badanej młodzieży, ale też na potencjał tkwiący w jej pozytywnym wartościowaniu rożnych form zaangażowania oraz w gotowości do działań ukierunkowanych na pomoc innym w przyszłości.

This article discusses those main motifs in Rev. Prof. Jan Szymczyk’s analyses that deal with new social movements, their specificity and a related research conception. The article puts emphasis on Szymczyk’s own research claims and proposals. It also outlines those aspects of Szymczyk’s oeuvre that constitute a distinctive quality of his sociological reflection. The text presents the following issues discussed by Szymczyk: the position of social movements in a democratic reality, the uniqueness and characteristic features of the new social movements and their theoretical representation in sociology, types of participation and modes of action as well as axiological and moral aspects of human and social functioning. The text explains the way in which Rev Szymczyk’s theoretical interests and research endeavours led to an array of empirical projects carried out under his supervision.

W artykule wskazano i omówiono główne wątki analiz ks. prof. Jana Szymczyka, dotyczące nowych ruchów społecznych, ich specyfiki i koncepcji badań, z akcentem na jego własne tezy i propozycje konceptualne oraz cechy charakterystyczne prowadzonej refleksji socjologicznej. Zaprezentowano podejmowane przez lubelskiego socjologa zagadnienia: umiejscowienia ruchów społecznych w przestrzeni demokratycznej, specyfiki i właściwości nowych ruchów społecznych i ich teoretycznego usytuowania w socjologii, typów uczestnictwa i sposobów działania oraz aksjologicznych i moralnych aspektów funkcjonowania. Ukazano przełożenie teoretycznych zainteresowań i propozycji badawczych ks. J. Szymczyka na projekty empiryczne, realizowane pod jego kierunkiem.

The aim of the article is to analyze the axiological foundations and purposes of social engagement in two directions in the reflection on civil society: the republican and liberal. The article seeks to answer the questions: what ideas of motives of contextual and goal-oriented citizen actions emerge from these two concepts of civil society? What values would create the constitutive elements of potential motives relating to the past as well as the objectives of the action in these discussed trends? What values would point to the goal of citizen engagement in a certain type of society? The analysis has been performed from the perspective and application of the concepts of sociology of understanding, and in particular Alfred Schütz’s concept of motivation to act. This discussion is supplemented with the specifics of civil societies in post-communist countries.

Celem artykułu jest analiza aksjologicznych podstaw i celów zaangażowania społecznego w dwóch nurtach refleksji nad społeczeństwem obywatelskim: republikańskim i liberalnym. Artykuł zmierza do odpowiedzi na pytania: jakie wyobrażenie motywów kontekstowych i celowościowych działań obywatela wyłania się z dwóch koncepcji społeczeństwa obywatelskiego? Jakie wartości stanowiłyby konstytutywne elementy potencjalnych motywów odnoszących się do przeszłości oraz celów działania w omawianych nurtach? Jakie wartości wskazałby jako cele swego zaangażowania obywatel danego typu społeczeństwa? Analizę przeprowadzono w perspektywie i z zastosowaniem pojęć socjologii rozumiejącej, a w szczególności koncepcji motywów działania Alfreda Schütza. Uzupełniono ją zestawieniem ze specyfiką społeczeństw obywatelskich w krajach postkomunistycznych.

The aim of the article is to identify and analyze the main theses concerning the relations between the civic society and religion against the background of the leading paradigms of sociology of religion. The conception of mutual relations in the reality mentioned in the title are presented as three model propositions: opposition/competitiveness, autonomous coexistence and complementarity. Due to the close relations with transformations in the social, economic, cultural and moral spheres on the micro and macro social level, and in order to illustrate the theses more fully, they are presented in the context of modern theories of sociology of religion, with the use of the studies and systematic findings by Rev. Prof. Janusz Mariański in both these areas. Also, the connections between particular theses and the leading interpretation traditions of the civil society are shown.

Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja i analiza głównych tez dotyczących relacji pomiędzy społeczeństwem obywatelskim a religią na tle wiodących paradygmatów socjologii religii. Koncepcję wzajemnych relacji tytułowych rzeczywistości ujęto w trzy modelowe twierdzenia: przeciwieństwa/konkurencyjności, autonomicznej koegzystencji oraz komplementarności. Z racji ścisłych związków z przemianami w sferze społecznej, gospodarczej, kulturowej, moralnej, na poziomie mikro- i makrospołecznym oraz dla pełniejszego zobrazowania tezy te zaprezentowano w kontekście współczesnych teorii socjologii religii, z wykorzystaniem studiów i systematycznych ustaleń poczynionych przez wybitnego socjologa religii, ks. prof. Janusza Mariańskiego w obydwóch kwestiach. Ukazano też powiązania poszczególnych tez z wiodącymi tradycjami interpretacyjnymi społeczeństwa obywatelskiego.

This paper comprises part of the current research on the phenomenon of new spirituality, conducted within the sociology of religion and social communication and media sciences. It aims to analyze selected manifestations of the new spirituality entering into the religious sphere of a religiously homogeneous society based on the example of Poland. A complementary application of quantitative and qualitative methods was proposed. The subject of the analysis is the results of a representative survey in which Poles define themselves in terms of religiosity and spirituality, with examples of their search for content on a new spirituality through online resources using the assumptions of the theory of social representations. The above concept resulted in the bipartite structure of the main part of the article. It was preceded by a theoretical introduction synthetically presenting phenomena identified as key features of new spirituality and ended with a discussion of the results and conclusions. The analyses indicate that, in Polish society, the category of phenomena and processes classified as new spirituality is distinguishable but complex and diverse. In the subsequent stages of the analysis, their socio-demographic determinants were shown, and then the media representations of the new spirituality were identified, categorized, and put into typologies.

Warunkiem trwania demokracji jest powrót do wielkiej moralnej tradycji chrześcijaństwa oddziałującego przez wieki na kulturę i narody Europy i innych kontynentów. Depozytariuszem wyrosłej z chrześcijaństwa, ale należącej do kultury moralnej ludzkości tradycji, jest m.in. Kościół katolicki uznający autonomię porządku doczesnego, w tym politycznego, pełniący wobec demokracji i rzeczywistości politycznej rolę „korekcyjną” polegającą na oczyszczaniu rozumu, by ten nieustająco powracał do swego potencjału i mógł odczytać „gramatykę” norm moralnych zawartą w naturze.

The condition for democracy to exist is the return to the great moral tradition of Christianity which has influenced the culture, European nations and countries of other continents for centuries. The depositary of the tradition which originates from Christianity but belongs to the moral culture of mankind is, among others, the Catholic Church, which recognizes the autonomy of the temporal order, including the political one. The Church plays a “corrective” role for democracy and political reality, which is based on purifying the reason so that it constantly returns to its potential and can interpret the “grammar” of moral norms contained in nature.
