Od wieków samobójstwo jest przedmiotem ożywionej dyskusji. Pozostaje w kręgu zainteresowania m.in. filozofów, socjologów, psychologów, kulturoznawców, a także prawników. Samobójca podlegał ocenie moralnej i prawnej.

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the problem of human deaths qualifications (including the biological mechanisms), and to outline the issue of identifying the event as a suicide, a murder or an accident. There are three ways of strangling: hanging, strangulation and choking. Elements of each of them are described, as well as differences between them. All of their features in conjunction with the forensic techniques may be helpful in understanding the subject. The paper also includes examples of the practice of forensic reports. Determining the cause of death is often a nuisance to those who carry out the inspection, and even raises doubts among judicial physicians themselves. Due to this fact, the author mentions about: the confluence of causes of death, murder simulated by suicide, suicides masked with murder as well as a combined suicide and post-aggression suicide.

Identifying dead bodies excavated from the fire and the assessment of the incident is an extremely difficult task from the point of view of criminology. The article aims to show the forensic and medico-legal aspects of the death by fire. The authors presented the statistics on causes of death due to fire, as well as the reasons for the fire outbreak. The effects of high temperature (flames) on the human body were discussed, as well as all changes that were caused by it, and the mechanism of death. A role of forensic experts in the evaluation of human death in such cases was defined. Methods used in the identification of victims of fires were shown. The authors also highlighted the fairly common phenomenon of corpse cremation by assassins aiming to get rid of the body and avoid criminal responsibility for his crime. Another issue raised in this article is to present the principles of inspection in the sites of the fire as well as basic mistakes in the course of inspections.
