The present study is a way of contemplating about the forms of the author´s subject who occurs differently in memoirs, fiction and journalism written by Slovak prose writer Milo Urban. What stands out here is creating different images of the creator. In the first case it is the recalling subject present in the second book of Urban´s memoirs Kade-tade po Halinde. Neveselé spomienky na veselé roky (All around Halinda. Cheerless Memories of Cheerful Years, 1992). Similar features can be found in the image of the author´s subject of the prose Živý bič (The Living Whip, 1927). It includes the author´s memories of the First World War organized in a literary way. These images are confronted with the author´s subject presented in Urban´s magazine and newspaper articles. This is where the progression of the author´s journalism career is revealed as its ideological aspects only show later when he becomes the editor-in-chief of the daily Gardista. The outcome of the analysis of the different ways of Milo Urban´s writing is ambivalence of the author´s subject depicted by him.

The study deals with the memoir book by Ján Smrek called Poézie moja láska 2 (Poetry My Love 2, 1989), which is the second part of originally intended multiple volume memoirs. It is also focused on Smrek´s articles published between the years 1930 – 1944 in the magazine Elán, where the poet worked as an editor. Both of the parallel text structures (the study includes articles by other authors published in the contemporary Slovak and Czech print media) feature extending the time period of a certain „historical imagination“, as noted by Paul Ricoeur in the case of various forms of remembering dated events. The memory of the author as the subject finds itself in the centre of the parallel structures, which results in individual chapters of the literary text alternating with comments from the magazine like in a collage. This may be an additional way of restoring the subject´s stances on culture, which are naturally filtered through its own personality. However, the study is primarily based on the reality generated by the chronologically organized memoir prose, which is hypothetically supposed to have tried to capture the history of the particular period of time in writing. The result of it is the interpretation of history reflected on by an individual. What might be useful in this situation is – in my opinion – to examine the issue of an unreliable narrator in autobiographical literature.

The article discusses selected texts of different genres by Milo Urban (1904–1982). The first text level is represented by fragments from his memoirs written in the 1970s and only published in the 1990s. An analysis of Urban’s journalistic activities during the Second World War provides us with another point of view. The article wishes to show different language versions elaborated by one author when dealing with one particular historical moment (the solution of the Jewish question and the Holocaust). This points at a significant change in Urban’s attitude to historical tragedies of the 20th century, and raises the question about a personal tragedy of an individual as well as his ability to cope with guilt and responsibility.
