Bringing together basic assumptions of posthumanism and ecocriticism the essay critically explores the thesis of the fundamentally anthropocentric nature of language pointing at the nonanthroponormative element present in language and, most noticeably, in its vocabulary. We try to present a concept of the lexical ecosystem in which clusters of words are used with reference to people but also to plants and animals. The core of this system is constituted by words connected with life conceived of as zoe – biological duration of living organisms involving the processes of birth, maturation, aging, and dying. Clusters of words of this ecosystem address fundamental activities of living organisms such as breathing, digesting, moving, articulating sounds as well as inner and outer features of man. Hence, the essay suggests that the concept of the lexical ecosystem necessitates a new pedagogical approach towards the question of metaphor and metaphorical nature of language.

This paper is an attempt to review the meaning of the category of stylizacja (stylisation), which has been established in the research tradition of linguistics and literary studies, and propose the term słowo gwarowe (a dialect word) instead. According to the author, the term stylizacja gwarowa (dialect stylisation) (dialektyzacja (dialectisation)) is inadequate for many contemporary literary pieces the nature of which is afi ctional and heterotrophic, and requires a new theoretical approach. The author defines słowo gwarowe as a type of an “interjected” voice of another person (often with anachronous folk roots), which is close to the word Innego/obcego (the other / strange). Based on the material of a few literary works (Sońka by I. Karpowicza, Gnój (Piece of Shit) by W. Kuczok, Pióropusz (War Bonnet) by M. Pilot), she shows that słowo gwarowe is a voice of someone worse, often potentially excluded, who is or should be outside the space belonging to the Self. Dialect is not treated here as a variant of general language, yet is preserves the value of archaism, strangeness and anachronism of thinking, which leads to notions such as marginalisation and exclusion.

Starting with the thesis that Gombrowicz’s unique “linguistic form”, which is a stylistic equivalent of form as an anthropological-philosophical category, we claim that it has become an important point of reference, a kind of stylistic stamp or matrix, used and modified by contemporary Polish authors. Following Olaf Kühl’s suggestions in his Stilistik einer Verdrängung. Zur Prosa von Witold Gombrowicz, we assume that indeterminacy and ambiguity are most characteristic features of Gombrowicz’s style clearly manifested upon the level of semantics (polysemy) and syntax (nominalised construction, retardation syntax). Reading texts by Wojciech Kuczok, Jerzy Pilch, Micha³ Witkowski, and Szczepan Twardoch, we find variously functionalized features of this style on all formal and thematic levels.
