Iwan Zawadowski originated from a Polish family. In the Bellingshausen expedition in 1820 he was a captain of a Russian ship "Wostok". One of the South Sandvich Islands shall be Zawadowski not Zavodovski Island. Two Polish men: Józef Kościuszko and later Adam Mierosławski lived on the St. Paul island for some time in XIX century, supposedly running a fishing enterprise.

Today, the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology is an ensemble of 1,300 employees numbering 110 doctors of sciences and 276 candidates of sciences of various disciplines. The Institute was established in 1946 on the basis of the Laboratory of Oceanology set up in 1941. P.P. Shirshov became the Institute’s first Director. The main objectives of the Institute lie in a complex study of the World Ocean and the Russian seas. About beginning of Institute of Oceanology and repression of P.P. Shirshov’s wife during 1946-48, daughter – Marina Shirshov published farther diary.
