Regional differentiation of demographic behaviours (including fertility ones) could be observed in all countries. The paper is focused on checking that in Poland there are stable, permanent differences in fertility calendar between regions. The analysis is based on distribution of age-specific fertility rates. The permanent differences are observed what enables to form 2 – relatively – homogenous groups including majority of the Polish regions. The northern-western group is characterized by high fertility at young ages (especially teenagers), and the southern-eastern group – by low fertility at young ages (with very low teenager fertility) and high fertility of women aged 30+.

Population ageing is a demographic phenomenon described as one with dual character – increase in number and percentage of older people is accompanied by very rapid increase in numbers of people aged 80 and more. The article is to present reasons, progress, and long-term consequences of the increase in numbers of the oldest old in Poland. Special attention will be paid to presentation basic socio-demographic characteristics of the subpopulation – with focus on centenarians – due to specificity of needs of the population under study.
After two decades when teenager fertility was rapidly diminishing in Poland the last few years are period of opposite changes. In the article attention was paid to the demographic background of the changes observed in the last decades and its spatial diversity. Because the most important subpopulation from the point of view of social policy “old hands” are extremely young mothers (i.e. aged 16 and less), mothers with at least two children, and mothers with no partner support accessible data on the three groups were presented.

Poszukując bardziej skutecznych metod działania, teoria i praktyka polityki społecznej w coraz większym stopniu odkrywa wagę analiz uwarunkowań pomyślnego przebiegu życia, zgodnego ze społecznymi preferencjami odnośnie do udanego życia. W artykule przedstawiono pojęcie przebiegu życia, społeczne preferencje odnośnie do pomyślnego życia przybierające postać normatywnego modelu przebiegu życia oraz stosowane w nauce o polityce społecznej podejścia analityczne do przebiegu życia.

Population ageing is more and more often regarded not as a threat but as challenge or even a chance for society. The evolution is related with development of the so-called silver economy. The term means all activities aimed at preparing society, organizations, and individuals for ageing, and first of all at sustaining activities, autonomy, and self-dependence of the older people. The paper is to present the concept of the “silver economy”, its pros and cons, and to assess if it is possible to implement the type of activities in Poland.

The voievodship (i.e. province) of Łódź is located in the central part of Poland. The aim of the article is to present the most important demographic trends observable in the past and in the future in the region. A specificity of population changes in the voievodship is related to long-term consequences of the past demographic processes, i.e. low fertility, high mortality and low migration attractiveness. The expected demographic position of the region will be worse in comparison to the today one due to sharp decrease in number of inhabitants, profound acceleration of the population ageing, and increase in dependency ratios.

Active ageing is more and more popular concept treated as medicine against expected problems of increasing proportions of the elderly. Omówiony został wpływ fenomenologii, gerontologii krytycznej, neoliberalizmu, podejścia procesualnego i zarządzania przyszłością.
The turn of the 21st century has been a period of significant change in procreational behaviour in Poland and the aim of the article is to present the changes observed in regional capitals (of voievodships) in a broader context. The main tool used is the total fertility rate (TFR). The most important findings are those related to the observed similarity of the changes, but at the same time a fixed difference between ‘pioneers’ (the biggest cities) and ‘laggards’ (smaller cities located in the eastern part of Poland) is visible.

Przełom XX i XXI w. to okres znaczących zmian w sferze zachowań rozrodczych w Polsce.
Last hundred years is a period of very profound demographic changes in Poland. Population ageing – i.e. shift in age structure of population resulted from increase in proportion of the aged 60+ – is the most important among them. The demographic process is especially visible when case of Łódź is under study. In the 19th century and in the first two decades of the 20th century age structure of the Łódź inhabitants was extremely young due to immigrants inflow which rejuvenated the population. After 1930 the ageing were a fact with acceleration in the post-war period. As a consequence of very low fertility and decreasing attraction of the city as a settlement place in the last three decades Łódź is almost the most advanced in the population ageing in comparison to the other biggest Polish cities (Warsaw, Krakow, Posen, Wroclaw). The study is aimed at presentation how in the 20th century the population ageing in the biggest Polish cities manifested with special attention paid to issues of intergenerational support and to the so called double ageing.

Ostatnie stulecie to okres głębokich, demograficznych zmian w Polsce.
