The article concerns the circumstances of the creation of neurology and psychiatry faculties at the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius, established in 1919. It presents the difficult working conditions of the teaching faculties created after the Partitions period – the strive for the correct equipment, localization and staff. It examines the changes in those two faculties in the period of 15 years, until they were merged into one administrative structure in 1934. It also shows the scientific and didactic efforts of those faculties, underlining the independence of the teaching from the usual European approaches to neurology and psychiatry. The article is based on the analysis if the sources taken from the Vilnius archives.

Archival documentation pertaining to i9*-century patient care and medical treatment in Great Poland (Pol. Wielkopolska) is stored in Poznań State Archives where the documents about the city and voivodship can be found, and in Poznań Archdiocesan Archives. Those collections are supplemented by the books and periodicals o f E. Raczyński Memorial Municipal Library and the University Library. Compared to the war-ravaged archives and libraries of Warsaw, which suffered particular losses during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, these collections are more extensive and exceptionally interesting. Comprising various thematic groups and collections, they are, nevertheless, incomplete, especially in terms of content and chronology. In her presentation, the author highlights the sources, which, in her view, enable us to recreate a picture of 19th-century health care, often on the basis of little-known documents not mentioned in other collections.
