The output and exports of high tech commodities are indicators of the innovation efficiency of a country. The article contains results of a statistical survey on industrial manufacturers, conducted on the basis of High Tech Technology Products List (SITC Rev.3) adapted to the Ukrainian Classifier of the Commodities for Foreign Economic Activities. The survey's objective is to estimate scopes and categories of products included the List, manufactured by Ukrainian enterprises whose main activity belongs to the sectors categorized in the developed countries as high tech ones. Results of the survey confirm the assumption about heterogeneity of Ukrainian manufacturers belonging to high- and medium technology sectors, in input as well as in output terms, which leads to the conclusion about irrelevance of the sectoral approach for estimating scopes of the Ukrainian high tech output and the positioning of Ukraine at the international high tech market. As follows from the microlevel analysis conducted on the extensive survey database, the State Register for High Tech Industrial Enterprises of Ukraine is required, along with a targeted approach to monitoring and evaluation of the enterprises that make up the core of the international competitiveness and economic safety of Ukraine. Also, analysis by destination country shows low diversification of the Ukrainian high tech exports, with a significant share of Russia (more than 50% of high tech exports). Measures to preserve and reinforce the capacity of the Ukrainian high tech exporters are proposed.
