Is communication the exclusive attribute of animals? It turns out that it is not. Mechanisms of signal transduction also exist in the world of plants. What’s more, these signals can be exchanged not only between plants but also between plants and microorganisms. Biochemical interactions in which one organism secretes compounds negatively or positively influencing the growth and development of another organism, are called allelopathy and the compounds – allelochemicals. They play a significant role in ecological interactions between organisms, which gives the possibility to apply allelochemicals in agricultural practice, e.g. in biological methods of dealing with weeds. This paper describes the characteristics of allelochemicals as well as the possibilities of their practical application in modern agriculture.

Statistics is one of the greatest tools for drawing assumptions on the economic processes. Together with the development of the information society and because of the emergence of huge data collection – Big Data, the significance of statistics will increase. Simultaneously, those changes need to be followed by the transformation of statistics teaching. The article presents the experiences of delivering e-learning lessons focused on statistics software R-CRAN. The author tries to answer the question ‘what has to be done in order to adjust the teaching statistic software to the changes occurring in the economy?’.

This paper is an introduction to a relatively new (and little known in Poland) field of economic research – the experimental economics. We briefly sketch its history and main research areas, and describe some of most important findings in laboratory experiments and their significance for the mainstream economics. We also present a sample of the experiments conducted in the experimental economics seminar at Warsaw University.

Artykuł jest wprowadzeniem do stosunkowo nowej i niezbyt znanej w Polsce dziedziny badań ekonomicznych – ekonomii eksperymentalnej. Przedstawiamy skrót historii rozwoju tej dyscypliny i najważniejsze obszary badań, opisujemy część najważniejszych wyników eksperymentów laboratoryjnych, wnioski z nich i znaczenie dla głównego nurtu ekonomii. Prezentujemy też kilka spośród eksperymentów przeprowadzonych w ramach seminarium z ekonomii eksperymentalnej na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim.

Although the experimental methods were widely introduced into economics teaching process, there are relatively few didactic materials and tools which enable using e-learning in this approach. This is due to both, technical software limitations, as well as the lack of methodology for implementing this type of activity. This paper presents the basic principles of efficient use of economic experiments in e-learning teaching. Based on the experience of conducting online classes it can be concluded that the basic condition for active learning of economic theory is to use the elements of gamification and the flipped teaching, in which the economic experiment is followed by the introduction of theories and economic models. The second condition is to create a work environment so that the experiments can be carried out without significant investment of time and technical resources. LabSEE.com platform was created as a dedicated environment for creating and carrying out experiments on-line within the e-learning course or as an aid in m-learning. This paper presents the LabSEE.com platform and technical basis of experiments to create and share online.

We experimentally investigate two competition policy measures relevant for markets with network externalities: mandating technological compatibility and lowering the cost of switching between providers. We do so in a virtual market with the roles of both sellers and buyers being played by student subjects. We find only limited support for usefulness of the analyzed measures: our treatment manipulations have no effect on sellers’ pricing strategies. They do, however, reduce individual lock-in, helping the buyers to obtain the currently cheaper variant and thus increase customers’ welfare.
