The paper deals with the Slovak linguistics from the view point of its values at the beginning of the 21st century, especially as presented in the concept by Ján Horecký and in the prediction about the future attitudes to language, which were presented by Jiří Neústupný 20 years ago. The author says that the focus of Slovak linguistics on a system and a certain isolation of the language and its users is about to be overcome. This tendency is confronted with language holidays such as International Mother Language Day and European Day of Languages.

In the paper the author pays attention to appeals and petitions for protection of the Slovak language, especially toAppeal to protection of the national languagefrom 2006, which was signed by several cultural workers as well as some linguists, andAppeal to responsible state organs, institutes, politicians and Slovak publicfrom 2007 signed by various cultural and social organizations. Both are a reflection of view of the not professional public as well as some type of linguists on possibilities of the intervention into language, but also into the dynamic and stability of language. According to signatories of these appeals the Slovak standard language deteriorates and has an indeterminate future. The author agrees with the statement that the language is changing (its norms are changing) but he refuses view that it deteriorates. In this case the problem is whether this fact is or is not accepted. The author shows that we have to aim to describe norms of language in connection with our traditions but we have to be able to drift apart these traditions in cases where the language itself and its live norms awaken us.

The paper reminds some facts of the Ferdinand de Saussure‘s life, which could have influenced his posthumously published work Course in General Linguistics (1916). The attention is also paid to his other work Mémoire sur le système primitif des voyelles dans les langues indo-européennes (1879) which has played a role in the development of structural linguistics as well. The author shows that it is useful to go back (also critically) to all thoughts and premises of Ferdinand de Saussure even after 100 years. We still can, as it is also proved by F. Čermák, find there new stimuli and inspirations and, moreover, reveal a loopholes or unclear points that need another and more adequate interpretation

In this contribution we develop ecolinguistic and language-political comments referring to majority and minority societies. In general, the article focuses on the development of languages in the time of globalization. It also studies the language development in the context of foreign varieties of the Slovak language. At the same time it confronts language legislation with the language situation and it presents initiative in the field of research and description of the language situation abroad in relation to the Slovak language.

The paper deals with the department of the contemporary language (in the past also known as a department of literary language or a department of grammar and stylistics). Namely, with its past and present content, while emphasizing the changes from its beginning in 1943. Scientific development of the department can be described as a) a movement from a systemic paradigm towards the pragmatic one, with a particular emphasis on language use in a specific social and cultural context, b) an increased interest in methodological issues in accordance with the development of the synchronic-linguistic thinking around the world and c) a constant self-reflection in confrontation with a classic approach to literary language and language culture.

The greatest attention in this paper is paid to the compendium on Encyclopedia of Linguistics (Encyklopédia jazykovedy, 1993), edited by Prof. Jozef Mistrík (1921 – 1980). Thanks to the succesfull publication of the encyclopedia, J. Mistrík became, according to some opinions, the pioneers of Encyclopedistics of Linguistics in Slovakia. Currently, the publication might need new edition however, so far it has not beed planed. Some modernisation of the entries and presentation of current views of language is carried out of linguistic entries currently published in the individual volumes of the Encyclopedia Beliana.
