The aim of this article is the characterization of chosen temporal expressions in the Book of Psalms of Mikołaj Rej. The author, who analyses the chosen fragments of the piece in a linguistic and stylistic way, depicts the originality and independence of Rej from Latin sources: the Wulgata and the Campensis in translations of those expressions that concern temporal relations. The author proves that the superior aim of the Rej’s translation piece was on the one hand the revision of Biblical realities and on the other hand the particular care of stylistic translation’s form.
The article deals with evaluative vocabulary in the religious language in 16th century. The analysis focuses on the evaluative lexicon used by Rej to form an image of an evil man in "David’s Psalter". The paraphrase used by Rej is rich with varied evaluative expressions in respect of the evil man, mainly adjectival elements. It is clearly visible when compared to earlier medieval translations based on the verbal method of translating which follow the Latin linguistic model which is not diverse. What attracts attention is not only a big number of forms, but also the autonomy of the author’s lexical choices which testifies to the author’s free creation of a stereotypical idea of an evil man, to breaking with the Latin shape of Wulgata and to a search of one’s own way of the art of translation. A tendency to avoid repetitions and to care for the synonymic diversity of the epithets has paved a way in David’s Psalter for rare lexemes unknown to the literary language and for morphological doubles and lexemes formed with the use of rare formants. The material analysed has shown Rej as an artist who creates the text of his translation without any restraints and who applies synonymy as an important tool used to shade the meaning.

“David’s Psalter” by Mikołaj Rej is a prose paraphrase of The Book of Psalms whose main aim was to make the biblical text approachable to a 16th-century recipient. The pursuit of the concretization contributed to the continuous interference of the translator in the semantic and stylistic layer of the text, the change in imagery and the ‘exchange’ of reality. This cleared the way for the appearance in the Polish translation numerous images of the noble cultural community. They are present in both the plan of the stylistic layer: references to the system of values common for the nobility (rusticity, national service, the belief of the superiority of the nobility), and in the plan of the language: the inclusion in the text of the elements of 16th-century language etiquette typical of the sociolect of the nobility, as well as the lexicon and the phraseology known from the everyday speech of the nobility.
The article aims to present the most important features of the biblical prose of Mikołaj Rej on the basis of David’s Psalter. The subject of the analyses has not been chosen randomly, as David’s Psalter belongs to ‘pure’ religious texts and it refers to the tradition of free translation, grounded in Poland by the work of Walenty Wróbel. Although it was created in the beginnings of the writer’s works, this literary piece shows stylistic maturity. The analyses indicate that the style of translation is the result of Rej’s conscious, artistic work, who maintained some of the features of the traditional Psalter style.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the phraseological layer of the poetic paraphrase of The Psalter in Bohdan Drozdowski’s translation. Published in 2008, King David’s Psalms are an interesting example of dynamic equivalence in the area of translation. They also make an attempt at finding, at the level of the system of the Polish language, specific syntactic, semantic and stylistic equivalents of the same values as the original Hebrew text. The purpose of the conducted analyses is to answer the question whether, and to what extent, Bohdan Drozdowski retains the layer of traditional phrases, which are associated with the Psalter style. To what extent his poetic paraphrase breaks with the Polish tradition of translation, which has been developing since the Middle Ages, and to what extent it has remained faithful to it. In Bohdan Drozdowski’s paraphrase, traditional biblical phrases are intermingled with Polish idioms that are abundant with marked colloquial lexis and expressive formations, which permits the conclusion that although the poet wanted to modernise Psalms and adapt them to the mentality and sensitivity of the modern reader, he did so while protecting the layer of traditional phrases. This layer, although slightly depleted in comparison to traditional translations, is noticeable and penetrates deep into the text of the translation, becoming, so to speak, a basis for the innovative ideas of the translator. This intended coexistence of lexical and phraseological layers that are so stylistically and genetically varied is a characteristic feature of the paraphrase in question. In this multitude of voices, the voice of many epochs can be heard, which seems to be emphasised by the timeless character of the Psalter, visible in the Polish language since the mediaeval times. This means that Bohdan Drozdowski’s paraphrase links, as it were, the old times and the modern times and becomes a meeting place of the tradition and the present day.

The aim of the article is to address the problem of the authorship of the anonymous prose paraphrase of David’s Psalter, ascribed to Mikołaj Rej. It also deals with scholars’ difficulty of establishing the authorship of old texts, which is the result of insufficient scientific methods, based on the analysis of the whole text (the frequency method, the lexical test). It is often the case that such difficulties arise in a situation in which the text is heterogeneous, created by the cooperation of a number of authors. The analyses show that the most effective scientific method concerning the anonymous Psalter is the use of Gustav Herdan’s stylometrical method and the compilation of frequency dictionaries, separately for each of the psalms. Moreover, the syntactic features of particular psalms could be dealt with by means of a statistic research. It proves justifiable and necessary to use the stylometrical method in order to verify the previous, sometimes contradictory results of scholars, formulated on the basis of intuitive observations.

The article focuses on lexical peculiarities of David’Psalter by Mikołaj Rej, that is on these lexical forms which are not present in the 16th-century lexicographic sources or which are present in the dictionaries only on the basis of Rej’s works. Such peculiar lexemes frequently appear in Rej’s paraphrase, usually as synonymic equivalents, or even as word-formation doublets, of lexemes whose position in Polish literature is stable. Various factors decided about whether to include neologisms in Rej’s paraphrase, such as: the desire to strive for lexical precision and word-formation regularity, the possibilities of creating a lexeme and the aspect of versification and rhythm, which aimed at putting together forms created with the help of the same suffix. What helped to choose and accept some neologisms was also the desire to divide these lexemes which occurred next to each other in parallel verses.
The article deals with issues connected with chosen stylistic characteristics of prayers in the paraphrase of David’s Psalter by Mikołaj Rej. The analyses aim to determine the stylistic features of the prayer and to point out the features which give it a unique character. Rej’s prayers are kept in the poetics and conventions of a psalm. They make use of the biblical imagery, at the same time complementing the preceding psalms. Emotional epithets, accumulated through synonymous attributes, play an important role in the stylistic shape of the text. Rej uses means characteristic of the elevated style: evaluating epithets, numerous periphrastic expressions and distinguished metaphors of the biblical origin. On the other hand, Rej’s writing witnesses visible instances of crossing the boundaries of the familiar biblical style. The analyzed texts often assume a conversational character and each request is expressed in an individual, spontaneous way by means of different syntactic structures and emotive lexicon.
The article discusses the selected elements of the style presented in Letters from Africa by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The analysis of the lexical-phraseological and the syntactic layers of the text demonstrates that in Letters from Africa the artistic language is consciously created and functional. Its characteristic, stylistic feature is the extensive use of colloquial language, fixed, idiomatic phrases, proverbs and proverbial expressions. Therefore, such use of lexicon and phraseology refers to the traditional trends of the Polish language, the vivid language of everyday communication. What strikes the readers is the quantitative as well as the qualitative abundance of this type of marked units of language. This verbal layer, inextricably linked with the everyday language of the Polish people, is subject to the artistic syntactic rules characteristic of the rhetorical style. The skillful combination of two stylistic features is a testimony to the high value of the text: on the one hand, simplicity and moderation in the lexical-phraseological layer; on the other hand, abundance and poetic elegance which are present mainly in the syntactic layer. Thus, Letters from Africa reflect the language of common, everyday communication in an uncommon study.
The article contains alinguistic and stylistic analysis that identifies linguistic exponents of se-lected stylistic features of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s writing manner and detects the differences in the way he creates landscapes in his two works that represent the same literary genre: “Travel Letters from America” and “Travel Letters from Africa”. The basis for the analysis are descrip-tive statements (descriptions of sunsets), identical from the thematic point of view. Thanks to the analysis it appears that Henryk Sienkiewicz’s manner of describing nature was formed during his American trip, and later it was visible in his older “Travel Letters from Africa”. The evolu-tion of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s style concerns only the quality of linguistic means, first of all epithets, which in his African letters were selected in aharmonious way and they were subor-dinated to the realism of the description. In “Travel Letters from Africa” the author maintains more syntactic discipline and cares more about the rhythmic and phonic aspects.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the function of linguistic repetitions in the novel Ucho igielne of Wiesław Myśliwski. The subject of description are the repetitions of both lexical and syntactic units, as well as the units smaller than a word (morphemes) in a linear sequence of the text. The presented analysis shows that the writer skilfully uses the descriptions in various functions. First, they are an exponent of coherence of the text in which fragmentation of the segments of content can be noticed. Repetitions facilitate to follow the non-chronological narration, they signal continuity of a given theme within a given relation. Second, they are used as a stylistic means in an uttered monologue, therefore stylized as a spoken language, serving various purposes and primarily performing an impressive and expressive functions. Myśliwski also uses repetitions to create music of words, he confers to the text a kind of rhythm. Repetitions also visibly co-create the orality of the text as they are conducive to memorizing and making memory present. The remarkable power of repetition in the stylistic layer of the analysed work, its attractiveness, is also determined by a manner the writer uses this stylistic means. Myśliwski extremely carefully, in accordance with the rhetoric rules, constructs the composition of his work. Besides the syntactic parallelisms, we find examples of polyptotons and the etymological figures, apart from anaphors there are frequent anadiploses. Quite often repetitions draw the reader’s attention to the text itself, therefore being also one of the vehicles of the poetic function in the work.

The analyses deal with the descriptions extracted from Nad Niemnem [On the Niemen] by Eliza Orzeszkowa and Listy z podróży do Ameryki [Letters from a Journey to America] by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The studies focus on the chosen features of the descriptions of nature by referring to the textological and stylistic research methodology. Indices of parametric features (such as size, height, length, width, depth, thickness and shape) and indices of sensory feedback have been juxtaposed with one another. The analyses show that the repertoire of linguistic and stylistic devices used by E. Orzeszkowa is by and large the same as the one used by H. Sienkiewicz due to their reference to the Romantic tradition. The descriptions differ in the intensity of the mentioned indices and in their function. Sienkiewicz’s descriptions of nature are more concrete and definite, while Orzeszkowa’s are more creative, with a tendency to poeticise nature.
