The technological progress is now one of the most important factors that determine the development of a modern global economy. It boosts the demand for highly competent workers. As a result, workforce employed in the information sector and hightech sectors is growing, while the number of workers in traditional sectors is constantly declining. A thesis can be put forward therefore that the future development of modern technologies will make the knowledge sector grow and significantly modify the economic space, because of investments allocated to the development of R+D centres. The article endeavours to identify how the new economy influences the knowledge sector development and special attention is paid to changes taking place within industry. The question can be asked about the place and role of the industrial sector in building a knowledge economy and the sector's importance for employment.

The results of an analysis of the costs of quality and environmental in two companies with the similar product line has been presented. In the first part of this article has been presented empirical data and the index analysis of the factory of tools “PAFANA” SA at Pabianice. In the second part there has been described, the profile of empirical data and the index analysis of the factory of piston rings “PRIMA” SA. The evidences have confirmed many positive results of quality management in both companies.
