W artykule zaprezentowano uwarunkowania rozwoju społeczeństwa in¬formacyjnego (SI) oraz związki między koncepcją SI a rozwojem gospodarczym. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań ankietowych gospodarstw domowych, przedsię¬biorstw i administracji publicznej zidentyfikowano kluczowe czynniki determinujące rozwój SI w Polsce. Zbadano zależności pomiędzy miernikami SI i rozwoju gospo¬darczego w wybranych krajach europejskich.

The article presents determinants of information society (IS) development and relation between information society and economic development. Based on survey conducted in households, companies and public administration entities key factors for IS development in Poland were identified. Correlation between measures of information society and economic development in selected European countries was examined.

The articles presents research field of economics of information. It points key role of information in taking optimal allocation decisions and imperfect information as a determinant of economics of information progress. Specific of information markets in imperfect information conditions is characterized. The necessity of narrow and wide approach to research field of economics of information is recommended.

This paper focuses on essence and relationships between information society (IS) and knowledge economy (KE) concepts. The aim of this article is twofold. The first objective is to denominate the conceptual framework and relationships between IS and KE conceptions. The second is to present dependencies between the indexes of IS and KE development level in selected countries. Firstly, based on the notional relations between information and knowledge, there are characterized the relationships between concepts of information society, knowledge economy and knowledge society (KS). Secondly, using popular composite indexes evaluating the degree of IS and KE development i.e. Networked Readiness Index (NRI), ICT Development Index (IDI), Knowledge Economy Index (KEI) and Summary Innovation Index (SII), there were studied corelations between information society and knowledge economy in 34 selected countries in 2012. The paper concludes by stating limits and implications for further research. This work contributes to systematization and integration of knowledge about the mutually permeable conceptions of information society and knowledge economy.

The paper presents mezoeconomic dimension of research on knowledge-based economy conception in Silesian voivodeship. The aim of the paper is to evaluate a new economy infrastructure development level in functional and spatial frames and its potential in creating new workplaces and demand for new skills. New economy infrastructure is considered as new economy businesses, business environment institutions and activities which support technological entrepreneurship.

This paper focuses on the measurement of information society. The aim of this paper is twofold. The first objective is to present a coherent picture of measurement methods for information society. The second aim of the paper is to show measurement findings of information society in selected countries – especially Poland. First, the paper presents available methods of information society measurement and a core set of internationally agreed information society indicators. Second, the measurement of information society was performed with the application of three methods – measuring the influence of ICT on GDP, measuring the ICT Development Index and measuring the Networked Readiness Index. Finally, a discussion was undertaken in order to establish a framework for the development of information society’s quantitative measurement methods.

Opracowanie dotyczy budowy społeczeństwa informacyjnego w regionie, a w szczególności w województwie śląskim. Jego celem jest zidentyfikowanie oraz ocena projektów i przedsięwzięć realizowanych w województwie, ukierunkowanych na rozwój społeczeństwa informacyjnego. Przeprowadzone badania mają charakter deskrypcyjno-empiryczny. W części poznawczej opraco-wania przedstawiono ideę społeczeństwa informacyjnego oraz cele strategiczne rozwoju społe-czeństwa informacyjnego. W części empirycznej zaprezentowano wyniki analizy projektów i przedsięwzięć realizowanych w województwie śląskim, głównie dotyczących: poprawy technicznej i ekonomicznej dostępności infrastruktury informatycznej i telekomunikacyjnej oraz zwiększenia ilości i użyteczności usług i treści cyfrowych. Rezultaty studiów mogą zostać wykorzystane zarówno przez teoretyków-badaczy, jak i praktyków podejmujących aktywności dla rozwoju społeczeństwa informacyjnego.

The paper refers to issues related to creating the information society in a region. The aim of our study was to analyze the information society projects and activities in the Silesian Voivodeship. Firstly, the essence of information society and its key links like information society stakeholders, ICT infrastructure and information are presented. Secondly, special attention is given to the presentation of projects related to ICT infrastructure, e-services and e-public services. The paper concludes with a discussion of research findings. Researchers and scholars who develop studies on information society could find significant guidelines in this paper. For practitioners, results of this study can be used to undertake empirical activities aimed at information society development.

Research background: In existing studies two main channels of international technology spillovers are extensively discussed - trade and FDI. Nevertheless empirical studies give mixed results regards the nature and extent of trade and FDI spillovers. Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to study import and foreign direct investments (FDI) as channels of international TFP spillovers. Methods: We employ dynamic spatial autoregression (SAR) methods. Our panel comprises data for 41 developed and upper mid-developed countries over the period 1995-2014. Findings & Value added: Our preliminary results show that (1) the trade and investment channels are both important for technology transfer, (2) the degree of their significance depends on the absorptive capacity such as good quality of the institutions.
