Endangered languages in public outreach: Lessons for linguists

Linguists who collaborate with communities of speakers of endangered languages emphasize that it is often very practical matters such as the availability of resources or the political conditions in which they conduct fieldwork that influence their work the most. This article shows that linguists acting for the sake of endangered languages in a totally different environment, i.e. at European schools with students and teachers who usually are not familiar with the topic of language endangerment, may face similar challenges. I report on the results of a public outreach project aimed at raising awareness of language endangerment among secondary school communities in four European countries, and focus on Poland in particular. Three parallels with linguistic fieldwork are drawn in this article which are to illustrate that similarly to language documentation and revitalization projects, in public outreach enterprises the goals and views of external linguists may be radically different from those of the non-linguist parties involved. Mundane as they may seem, issues such as teachers’ working conditions need to be understood and properly addressed by linguists who wish to effectively bring their message about endangered languages across to the general public.

W artykule zaprezentowano podstawy ogólnej koncepcji analizy przedwdrożeniowej w odniesieniu do systemów zarządzania treścią w organizacji. Jest ona przede wszystkim wynikiem badań literaturowych oraz doświadczeń praktycznych autora. Podstawowym celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie wybranych aspektów ogólnej koncepcji metodyki analizy przedwdrożeniowej stosowanej w przypadku systemu klasy Enterprise Content Management (ECM). Elementy tej koncepcji zostały pozytywnie zweryfikowane praktycznie w kilku średnich przedsiębiorstwach przemysłowo-handlowych. Należy zaznaczyć, że w literaturze na temat zastosowań systemów IT wciąż brakuje próby systemowego podejścia do kwestii implementacji systemów klasy ECM. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę przynajmniej częściowego wypełnienia tej luki. W pierwszej części artykułu zaprezentowane zostaną najważniejsze pojęcia z opisywanego obszaru. The article describes the main factors which directly or indirectly influence the range and pace of IT implementation projects. It analyses the main structural elements and functional procedures of the implementation reengineering in the ECM (Enterprise Content Management) systems area, and presents the outline of managing projects execution. The main objective of this paper is to present the author's general conceptual model of the implementations of the ECM system in an organization, resulting from the preliminary literature review and extensive practical experience. Streszczenie: W artykule omawiono główne czynniki wpływające bezpośrednio lub pośrednio na zakres i tempo implementacji przedsięwzięć informatycznych, zanalizowano podstawowe elementy strukturalne i procedury funkcjonalne praktycznej reinżynierii wdrażania systemów, a także przedstawiono zarys zarządzania realizacją projektów.
